350 clacking

ok exhausting all suggestions I've found online.

Torque converter bolts were good
Flexplate had no cracks and all bolts were present, no chipped teeth, starter look good as well.

Changed valve covers yesterday to ones with baffles and the wonky rocker cylinder 1 seemed to stay out if not tighter than first few times I did it... possibly.

Checked #1 and #4 spark plugs for anything odd and sent to @Wes Harden both looked the same.

Checked all rockers that could wiggle at TDC. and they all had pretty much the same play.

Update... painted other convertor cherry red...

So after swapping on the summit baffle valve covers the noise was louder. I noticed oil dripping from the aback of both valve covers. Passenger was good after tightening.

I did however notice as I tightened down the driver side where all the noise is coming from. That when the nut got tighter the sound got louder. Backed the nut off sound got softer. As I was doing this I noticed with the help of sun glancing on the valve cover it was pulsating with the the rocker speed.

Anyway long story somewhat shorter the #1 cylinder rocker intake, was hitting the valve cover...

Put the old valve covers after giving that rocker another 1/4 turn. Stated it up and no noise, well at least not excessive. Neighbor came over to listen through the rubber hose and noticed nothing other than "normal" rocker clatter.

So, I'll give it a drive tomorrow and see what happens

I must add that it was making noise with the old valve covers. I put the old ones back on and the sound is roughly the same if not quieter but certainly not louder... so not completely gone but certainly not made worse like the black summit made the sound.

Question are the rockers studs pressed in or screw in? If screwed it how could it back out and if pressed in how do you fix that?

Edit: I found this. Level of difficulty is roughly what, if this is indeed happening?

Stock heads are pressed in. They do have a tendency to pull out sometimes. Most aftermarket heads are screw in. And there are two sizes of studs available.

I love how the guy has all those metal shavings on the head, doesn't plug oil holes. Hahahahahaha

Ok mine are pressed in, I think. Haaha

Measure the height of each stud? If it's all stable, a simple solution could be fatter gaskets or stacking 2 gaskets.

Yes,
I measured the problem one to see but I did not measure it in relation to the others. I just checked the threads on top of the nut. And yes, I did put on two gaskets. I'm going to drive it some and recheck the stud.

Since last post. I've driven about 40 miles and that clacking noise seems to have subsided. It's still noisy at startup as the oil gets going but.. maybe it was an exhaust at the collector and the heat sealed it back up? Who knows? Just updating.
