I have a cracked 1 that coolant is seeping out of. Should I buy both or can I get away with buying one side. And what problems if any would I encounter if I do just get one side?

Changing only the cracked head is ok as long as you match the casting numbers so that you end up with the same head. There are so many different heads available that you don't just want to throw any old head on there.
1/2 the job now will cost you 2 x later. just get a matched set and get it done all at once.
