I pulled my dipstick to check the oil, and it is over the full mark by 1 inch, and smells gassy and is quite thin. Just changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago. I don`t drive the truck much, I use it as a yard truck for the farm. maybe has 3 hours running time on it since the change.Any ideas would be very helpfull. Thanks for your time.

You are getting gas into your cylinders and it is running past the rings and into your oil pan. Maybe the float is sticking in your carb?

Fuel in the oil is from a bad fuel pump diaphragm.

It is most of the time, but I had it from worn rings, I put some hot spark plugs and it cured it.
:D
But always check the fuel pump first, it's the most common problem especially if you haven't run it too much since the last oil change.

You will NEVER get an extra inch above the dipstick with bad rings in 20 years let alone 3 hours of run time.

Thank guys i`ll go with the fuel pump first and see what that does. I also need toget my q jet fixed up it dosn`t work so shxt hot, choke don`t work and the secondarys don`t open. Any other sugestions are much apreciated.

he's probably right! most old motors dont produce oil, they burn, leak, or "USE" it.

IF it were me and I had a small block producing oil, I'd sell mineral rights to exxon. lol:D

Fortunately we're not talking about "making oil" but showing an inch OVER the full mark on the dipstick which is either going to be WATER or FUEL and since he said it smells "gassy" i'm going with fuel entering the oil raising the level on the dipstick.

When i take the fuel pump off is there any way to see if it is bad or do ya just replace with a different one. Thanks.

Just replace with a new one. There is no way of really checking unless it is an aftermarket pump that can be taken apart such as some of the Edelbrock pumps.

The bad fuel pump might be part of the cause for your crappy carb. Bad pump = low fuel pressure.

4x4 Thanks i just changed the pump with a different one, also made a new fuel line from the pump to the carb, old one was kinked.I also put a different dist on the motor. It runs much better all ready, my secondarys are actually opening now! So No Jeep i think you are right about the fuel presure being low. Now i`ll just have to watch the oil level, but i know my carb still needs some work. Thanks guys!!

kudos to this post! i swapped out carbs last weekend and noticed my oil pressure dropped. the carb i put on was supposed to be rebuilt but i couldn't get the idle down. turns out the secondaries were stuck wide open and fuel mixed into the oil. changed out the oil today and pressure is back where it should be.

Just wondering, you did change the oil right? That gas in the oil will wipe out the main/rod bearings in a heart beat. I pulled apart one of those motors last year, it only had about 1/4" of clearance in 2 rod bearings... :D

Like TerryD said, make sure you change the oil and filter. You will ruin the bearings if you don't.

Its not worth checking the fuel pump, but there is a way if you have not thrown it away.

Make sure there is some gas in the old pump. Put it in a vice, or just hold it in your hand if you have a good grip.

Put your finger over the output, and press the lever in and out. You should see some gas squirt out past the lever where it would go into the block.

Going to change the oil today, that truck just sits in my garage most of the time,I just use it around the yard in the winter.I`ts not insured. Thanks for the tip on checking the pump. I`ll try that just for fun. BTW I don`t throw anything away unless I know it`s useless.
