I just had a shop replace my oil pan gasket and oil filter adapter gaskets. They returned the truck to me after which I drove if 40 Miles before hearing a knock in my motor. I checked the oil level after it cooled and found the level to be below the ADD mark on my dipstick.

This truck is equipped with an oil cooler and i fear that the 5qrts the put in motor wasn't enough and may have resulted in damage to the motor.

How far below? I don't even get 5 quarts in on mine on an oil change, and I too have a cooler and the larger stock SBC pan.

Just a bit below "add" I'd say something else happened.

the oil level was at the "A" on ADD. Its take 5 quarts on regular oil changes. I'm concerned that after removing the oil pan and filter adapter from block that 5 qrts wasnt enough to replace what was removed.

I'll wait and see what 4x4high has to say, but I suspect other than real hard cornering or hill climbing, oil that low on the dipstick shouldn't cause problems in 40 miles. I *know* I've been that low for much longer periods of time/distance, and didn't experience your problem.

I'd be more concerned maybe with improper reassembly, or faulty internal components if there are any, that had dropped oil pressure. Do you have a gauge? How is/was oil pressure after the work?

you hit on two points:

1. I am currently using the truck in Appalactian Mountains in PA.
2. The oil pressure was at 30 even with the low level on dipstick.

Some gasket material from the oil filter adapter getting caught in a oil galley, etc.. Hence starving the rods or mains for oil? Just a guess.

Oil pressure will fluctuate (to nothing) if the pump is starved of oil. I vote for something else other than low oil level. :(

But 4X4HIGH will weigh in I'm sure. :)

the shop suggested i run a higher octane fuel given the altitude. they contend that this truck was mean't for this elevation and current climate. temperatures are in the single digits and the terrain is rough. I'm running her in 4high everyday, all day, on 87 octane fuel.

im not sayin the shop did this, BUT there have been cases recently where shops are sabotaging customer cars in hopes they will return to get repairs done. since the conomy is piss poor, most of the guys i know that operate repair shops are struggling to keep the doors open. hope this wasnt the case with your new problem.

check to make sure its not an accesory onthe front of the engine making noise first.

I've given this guy almost 2000 in business in the past week. my fuel pump, all the front ball joints and the oilpan gasket replacement. I have been the most business he's seen in this small town.

I wont suggest there is sabotage but u never know. I had a buddy floor the gas pedal while i stood at the hood and its clearly the motor knocking in the area of the #8 cylinder beneath the vavle cover.

So you hate your truck?

As for low oil level, you are OK as long as the oil pressure gauge stays high. Did you notice it doing anything? Any chance you have a high volume oil pump? I've heard they make low oil level problems worse.

And why higher octane in the mountains? I always thought you went lower at elevation.

I would kind of suspect a foreign object or dirt in the engine.

Heck No! I love this ole girl, she's badass!

I'll have the oil changed and see how it does. This is the original motor with 194000 miles.

Ok, here i am. :D

You can safely run your engine with only 3 quarts of oil with a stock volume oil pump. lets jump ahead for a minute first though, you said you hear a noise around the #8 cylinder valve cover area, start by removing that valve cover and carefully inspecting the valve train. You could have a broken valve spring, rocker stud pulling out, bent pushrod, or a pushrod through the rocker arm. Once you've determined everything there to be good then you need to start the engine and pull one plug wire at a time until the noise either changes or goes away then concentrat your efforts on that particular cylinder. If it is a lower end knock my best guess would first be that the oil screen fell off (common for BBC's but not unforseen on SBC's). Start with this and then we'll go from there.

i'm in oil field presently, so i can't do anything. its -5 degrees outside presently and snow everywhere. I'm hoping to get to GA next week to address the issue. thanks for the advice. i will start here.

wonder if the oil pump went out? do you have oil pressure? my pump went out and it started knocking had to shout it down and tow it home.

a coworker of mine just brought her camaro in for a new oil pan gasket and valve cover gaskets...she heard a knocking noise and thought she must be low on oil...shes in a wheelchair so she gets me to go buy her some oil at the corner gas station down the road.I get back, her oil is full...she said it either ticks on top or knocks on the bottom. We do see that her airfilter nut is stripped and so her air filter will not sit tight...next day she comes in and tels me she thinks its the air cleaner assembly banging around now...not sure what yours has or anything, but this just happened to my coworker a week or less ago...sounds similar to what you describe

While not where you appear to be hearing the problem, I've also had a pulley loose that sounded like a knock in the engine.

dont drive it anymore than you have too and take it back to the shop that did the work for them to look at.it might be something they over looked-it happens the techs are people too and do sometimes make mistakes.

Used to work at a Quik lube and people make mistakes!!! I would even advise my customers not to bring vehicles in for services on saturdays becuase we were all so focked up from the night before u definitley werent getting are 100% best. Most shops will diagnose for free if a porblem occurs after there services. Make sure you check your valvetrain when people filler up with oil they some times drop foreign objects in to your engine ( Change, ear rings, caps from the oil,ETC.) and people will yank there engine out for a build and find this and just get livid:doah:
