350 to 383

What compression ratios are typical of a 383 setup? If I retain my stock tbi will I be able to use 87 octane? What type of milage decrease can I expect going from stock 350 to 383? Thanks.

Compression is determined by which pistons you choose for the rebuild. There are pistons for stock compression with either 5.565" or 5.7" rods.
I guess your milage will be close to what you are used to on your current setup, maybe a little bit worse. The 383 will of course suck more fuel & air....and you probably will be on the throttle a bit more since it´s so d*mn FUN !!

I am also planning on a 383 for next time. My 350 has already been rebuilt/bored over 030. Is there a difference in stroker kits when buying a kit for an engine that has been bored 030 over as compared to a 350 that has never been rebuilt? I would imagine it is only larger pistons. What do you guys think? Any ideas on a good size cam for a daily driver? I'd appreciate any input you guys can offer. I want a lopey idle but good streetability.

In a 383, I would suggest using a split-profile cam , e.g. a Comp Cams Dual Energy or one of their xtreme-energy cams.
A friend of mine uses a dual energy cam with 211/221 at 0.050, .442/.465 lift and a 110 deg. LSA in a 388 stroker ( 350 bored 0.060 over, 9.6:1 compr. ratio ) with World Sportsman-Heads and 5.7-inch rods and got about 407 hp@5000 and 461 (!) lb-ft@3600, which should be enough for any blazer.
If you want even more power, you could change to a roller cam and full roller rockers, but I personally dont think
that you will feel a major difference at lower rpms. (But you will definitely feel a major difference in your wallet).

Where can you buy a 383 block already cut out for rod/crank clearence? Or do I have to get a local speed shop to do it for me? How much do the cost?

My block is 60 over and I must assemble it with one piston to check the clearance. You then mark the block and grind it or have a machine shop do it. So my engine will not be a 383 but really like a 389.

Thanks, Armin. Does he do okay running super unleaded?

i have built one, and helped build another 383, none of them needed clearance for the rods or the crank. but a friend built one and the rod bolts interfered with the cam. so i guess its just discrepencies in block dimensions.

Knife.

I just replaced the 350 in my new suburban with a 400 short block thats 30 over. To make it run right at WOT I had to up the fuel PSI by 1.5 it now runs like a pony car
