I got this Q from another guy on here and I think it belongs in the garage so you guys can help me answer it.
What do you think of running 4.56's with 42's?? do you wish you had lower, doubler or in axle?? im thinkin of gettin a cucv and putting 40-42 iroks under it, but seems like i might be missing some gearing till i do 5.38's. ill still have a 208 under it too, so a little lower low.
.
My answer is that I have the 465 with 6.55-1 gearing who saves me.
With a 400 208 I was not able to crawl much with 38s.
So I guess a doubler or better gears in the axles are a must with 42s

With 42's he'll definitely want 4.88's minimum, 5.13's would be better.

Buddy

depends on what he uses the truck for, i have a buddy the has 44's w/3:73's, bbc/465/205...mud truck and in granny and lo on tranfer, he has enuff power to turn them over in the muck...thing crawls around in the mud surprisingly well:dunno: its not a dragster/slo takin off around town, but in double low he seems to have enuff gear for the mud, bet he couldn't crawl on rocks very well

edit: btw he's had this setup since last winter, still a stock k5 as in 6 lug, 44 front/12 bolt rear...gets driven to the mud holes maybe twice a month, idk...if it was mine it would have broken by now, not b/c i would drive it any harder, just because it was mine, lol...some people have all the luck...oh yea, open front, gov-bomb rear

if this thing sees a lot of street, regear the axles. If not so much street and mostly offroad, doubler/tc gears. You get very little gain in reduction by regearing the axles for and offroader. But on the street in high range, your going to want lower axle gears for driveablility. My rig had a 400/203 w/ 4.10 and 40's, slow on street, perfect for wheeling in 4-low. 4 high was useless.

I run 456s with 700r4, 203/205 and have the best of both worlds. I can crawl pretty darn well, and I can run it down the highway at 55...

I'm running 4.56's with 42's, th350/np203 combo. Its less than sporty around town, and the only saving grace offroad is the 6.2 diesel. I'll be converting to an sm465 with some kind of doubler or extra reduction soon.

While not optimal, I think it would work decent.

I run a 6.2/700R4/241/4.10 combo with 39.5" tires currently. While I would love to do a doubler or lower axle gears they are really low on the "want" list of items right now...don't feel I really NEED them, but maybe I just don't know any better because I've never had lower gears. It's not a DD and gets hauled on a trailer, but does get some pavement time to and from the parking lot to trail and in between trails. We don't have a lot of really hardcore rock crawling but I have run Widowmaker in Slade several times and thought it had plenty of gearing. For example, first gear/low range in mine is about 34:1 while the TH400/208/4.56 would be just under 30:1. On the street in high range when I take it off it is 12.5:1 while his would be 11.3:1. Now the combination of the 400/208/4.56 combo doesn't have quite as much gear and add 42's there is a noticable difference, but based on how I feel my setup is quite adequate I don't the difference would make it completely unusuable.

Another example is 78Buford with a C6/205/4.10 setup with 42s. With a worn and weak 460 it didn't crawl very well at all but could handle everything else pretty well. After building the engine (500+ ft-lbs.) he can crawl reasonably well....and again, lower gears would be nice but are pretty low on his priority list. This example is only 19:1 low range, and 10:1 high range/1st gear on the street.

I will also restate that our normal wheeling is the Midwest/East Coast style that generally requires wheelspeed versus crawling ability. But we have both been to Slade several times and 78Buford has been to Harlan, so they have seen some technical (for this area of the country) rock trails.

i run 40's with my 6.2/465/205 and 4.56's with no problems. i can drive it around town, drive 75mph down the highway, and low and granny gear/ and even 2nd gear, that thing has no problem at all crawling on the trail. my next tire will be a 42 and i have no plans to regear. it would be nice to have lower gears, but since mine came 4.65 stock and it works fine, no need to change it.

I currently have 40s and 4.56s and its not too bad. Doubler is nice though for the nasty stuff. Am stepping up to 43s so will see how it goes then. Normally on the trail I run around in single low but still have decent power in high though.
