I have a '99.5 Sierra (new style) with a 4.8. I plan on swapping motors next year. I need to know if the 5.3 and 6.0 are dimensionally the same, or do I need to mod my c-member and frame...thanks

ahh, makes life much simpler...Thanks!

isnt there only a 5 horse difference between the 4.8 and 5.3?

I test drove a reg cab shortbox with a 4.8 once and that thing MOVED.

Not much horsepower difference between the 4.8 and 5.3 but the 5.3 about 30 to 50 more torque than the 4.8.

my 4.8 had over 220k and leaks oil badly...I figured if I;m gonna keep it, I'll put something a tad torqueier in it...

I swapped the 4 o2 sensors today, still have a lean code...the vato at a.z. didn't like Rush on my radio, so he wasn't real helpful scanning it today...focker

Have you put new intake gaskets on yet.

No, I did the anti fouler thing.

I used a couple of spark plug anti foulers. I drilled one so the o2 sensor would fit. Then I screwed the drilled one into an undrilled unit. Oddly, they come in packs of two...
Then I screwed them into the pipe, then installed the sensor.

I had to get a 90 degree unit off of fleabay for the passenger side so it would clear the frame.

It passed inspection, no trouble codes, and is running great. It just looks funny at night with the SES light off....It should last a little while longer, I hope.

I found the oil leak looks like a bad sending unit,,, Next payday maybe.:dunno:

Hey 62 FAT Guy,

You can buy junk yard 5.3's now(with about 120,000 miles) for @ $500 complete. Since you already have the ECM and wiring harness, you could put in one of them with the Cheap turbo option as Hot Rod did a few months ago.
Made absurd amounts of power.

Just an idea?

Just boost the 4.8 I have a buddy running a boosted 4.8 and it makes 657 RWHP on 10lbs of boost.

yeah agreed on the boosting the 4.8. He just said he had 220,000miles on his 4.8, so I thought I would suggest the junk yard 5.3 as on option.

I have come to have some real respect for my 4.8...as a driver, not a tow rig. Would have loved it in my old 79 Z28...

Yeah, I have learned much since I posted originally. 5.3's are everywhere.

What is this "cheap turbo" of which you speak....?

p.s. even with the high miles, it's running strong and uses no oil.

No knocks, ticks, pings...runs like a champ!

62 FG,

A few months ago, Hot Rod(the one with the 51 Dodge Station wagon on the cover, had an article about a cheap 5.3 with a Chinese turbo(source from E-bay @ $500 bucks) The bought a kit for piping and mounted the turbo on the front of the engine(but I have seen pics of them mounted any convienent place. The only major tuning needed was putting 43#/hour injectors in.
Since that issue they have done a Ford and a Dodge article with the same/similar setups.
Good Luck

thanks!!

:waytogo::waytogo:

I'll look into it.

I think I've seen it on trucks some back...they put the turbo under the bed...

Hey, there is a trend of "rear mounted" turbos, but keep in mind the air cleaner is mounted on the turbo, so when they are mounted in the rear, they are basically mounted in the dustiest place on the truck ! IMO

Yeah, the guys were having a "most bang for the buck" build off on a couple of street trucks.

My buddy put his whole system together for 975.00 the most expensive thing was the manifolds. He got the turbo for like a 190.00. When he boosted it the truck had 80k it, he is pushing 120k now and he drives it daily and races it every Saturday night. If the 4L60 would hold up everything about the truck would be great.

update: the plans of mice and men...

still running the 4.8, the check engine light is still off, and it's still running strong, so I'll just run it till it drops...

It's not burning oil, but the rear main seal is bad. I just don't want the hassle of dropping the t.c and tranny just for a seal, I'd figure when I drop it it will be for a swap...

I have an extended cab z 71, that little 4.8 has impressed me. It's had some nagging smaller issues, I believe were just from p.o.'s neglect.

Everthing I have fixed has stayed fixed. These Vortec's rawk!!:thumb:

I did change the cabin air filters today...I did a thread in the garage section with a couple of pics if anyone is interested...:waytogo:

Before you assume the rear main leaks.....The cam position sensor is mounted back there - if the o-ring on it gets to leaking, looks just like a rear main leak!

Dammit man!!

If I fix that I won't have anything to complain aboot!!!:haha::haha:

thanks:thumb::thumb:
