Is there such a thing as a 4 cyl. gas engine from an automotive application in the 4 Liter range?

There were a few, but it was a long time ago that anything that big in a straight 4 was produced.

From Wiki

Currently, one of the largest straight-4 engines in production is General Motors' Vortec 2900 installed in the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado small pickup trucks. It shares the same 95.5 mm bore and 102 mm (4.0 in) stroke as the larger inline-five Vortec 3700. The latest version of the Vortec 2900, the LLV, displaces 2.9 L (2921 cc, 178 in³) and produces 185 hp (138 kW) at 5600 rpm and 195 ft·lbf (263 N·m) at 2800 rpm. Engine redline is 6300 rpm.

Credit where credit is due (and it's an interesting read)

That is an interesting read. Learned quite a few things in there. Funny that the 4's aren't any bigger than that. You'd think it'd be more common to find them at least half the size of say a 454 or something along those lines.

in the late 60's and 70's International made a 196 ci 4 cylinder. they put them in the little Scouts.......i forget what they were called.

That was literally half of a 392 wasn't it? In the wiki article they mentioned IH had a 350 cid 4 cyl way back in the day. Redline was 1500 rpm, and found in some old tractors mostly.

It seems the inherant secondary imbalance is the major reason for the generally accepted size limits. The bigger it gets and the more power and R's it makes the bigger an issue the imbalance becomes.

^ yep

the 800's came with the IH 4-196 3212cc engine. Probably the largest you will find minus a diesel, or some farm/ag/generator motor.

yup....it sat at a 45* angle. what's 4 liter in CI's, 250ish? i never heard of a 4 banger that big though.

Well an 8.1 is a 496...so yeah a 4 litre 4 cyl would be roughly 240 ish CID.

We called them "Half a Pontiac"!--they were made from 326 Pontiacs cut in half--they used them in old Tempests and IHC Scouts...the Tempests had a weird wire rope driveshaft too!..with a transaxle in the rear!..one of our friends had one and we used to lift the rear end up while he did a smoke show with it,the driveshaft was like a big spring,it wouldn't let the tires spin if you power braked it!..

I haven't seen too many autos or trucks with large 4 bangers ,other than old Model T's and 20's Chevy pickups, dont know what size they were --where I have seen many is in farm tractors, old IHC's and Allis-Chalmers and Buda had some big 4 bangers powering their machines..

All these engine that guys posted are smaller than the 4 litre you are asking, the biggest 4 cylinder I know off is a 3.0 litre from Isuzu or Nissan, can't remember.
The GM 2900 that Rene mentionned is 2.9 litres.
I do see some Diesel straight 4 cyl in the 3.2 litre but thatis the biggest I have seen.
I have also seen a 3 litre V8 which is the opposite of what you are asking  Those cyl where tiny and that engine revved so fast because of the short stroke, I think it was a lotus engine.

The famous 4BT cummins is a 3.9 liter engine, that's about as big as you'll commonly find. As far as gas motors, yeah, the vortec 2900 is gonna be it. I had a tacoma with a 2.7L 4 in it. That was a torquey little bugger.

Hard to balance them when they get too big of displacement. That is why many 4 cylinder engines have balance shafts.

Forgot about that one, but that engine can shake, it's a testament to what has been said about balancing a 4 banger with big displacement.:eek1:

Im sure you can pick one of those up "on the cheap" no?

If you're talking about car/truck engines with tiny individual cylinders, the early 90's MX-3's often came with a 1.8L V6. Plenty of four cylinders out there though that are below that 300 cc per cylinder.

So why the interest in a big 4 cylinder gas motor?

Sometimes a thought pops in my mind and I start to consider the what ifs. A conversation with a customer got me to thinking about his issues with a particular build this time.
