Anyone run their winch cables to the top posts of a battery and the other cables to the side?

Heard that a winch electrical draw can blow out the positive side post due to excessive draw...is this a concern or myth?

I wired my winch that way but it was a conveinience (sp?) factor. I have not heard about the amp draw thing.

I run dual batteries and my winch is hooked to the AUX battery on the top post and all other accessories on the side post. FWIW you'll have problems if the battery isn't capable of supporting the amp draw of the winch and any other accessories that are attached to the battery and in use at the time. The same goes for the battery cables. There are lots of people who think you can just start adding accessories to a battery and everything is fine and dandy but this isn't the case. Just make sure you have a properly sized battery and that all electrical connections are of the proper size cable/wire and that all connections are CLEAN and TIGHT.

mtn burb...did you read that in the new 4wheeler magazine...i just got it today and literally just read that before i opened this page. haha...

I still have single battery for now , dual post . Starting to side posts , everything including winch is on the top .

Not sure about the winch part.

But batteries with all 4 posts are the only way to go. I HATE the side post only battery in my burb. Where the heck are you supposed to wire accessories? Gotta get one of those goofy accessory post things for it till i can afford a 2nd battery.

That's the way I have my battery wired and I've had no problems.

i have mine this way and have pulled out a lot of jeeps with no problem:wink1:

I just moved away from dual-post back to side-post only because the dual-post batteries are becoming less common. If you have a bunch of accessories, you should have a distribution block or electrical center of some sort. Stacking connections together only makes for inferior contact.

Plus, a side-post battery is a great place to set a tray of tools.

I have dual post batteries with the winch hooked to the top, and other accessories hooked to the side posts (also have dual batteries, so lot's of places to hook up).....but as somebody else said above it's just a convenience factor. My old batteries were only side posts, and while I never had any issues with the winch hook ups it was kind of a PITA to get everything hooked up without having a seperate junction block.

My yellow top is wired that way. I have my winch, amps, and off road lights wired to the top posts and the starter to the side. No problems here.

I have my optima set up with the winch cables on the top post, and the trucks power to the side post. When i use the winch the voltage goes way down, and it seems like the truck wants to shut off. I am thinking of going dual battery.

90% of marine batteries are dual post so they are not uncommon what so ever.

Dual post is all I'll buy and answering above, that is correct that you shouldn't hook a winch up to the side poles of a battery.

heh?

can't say I've EVER seen dual posts in a boat, ever... no purpose in it, they don't use any of that sissy sidepost stuff.. they are ALL toppost only...

Every marine battery i've had has 4 post, but none on the side. They have 2 lugs & 2 wing nuts on top.

4 post and dual post are different. Hell both of my new cars are top post only. The only side post I have is the K5 and that **** is coming out:D
