40"+ what engines/mods u running?

Because when you are in mud you need to spin your tires at a high rate of speed in order to get them to "clean out" the lugs so they can take another bite at the mud on their next revolution or you will just be spinning a big slick tire packed full of mud. With very low gearing your engine will be spinning very high RPM's.If you need to gear down in order to have the available torque to spin big tires you'll be through your reasonable(read:livable)RPM ceiling and into the parts store real quick.

so shift... nobody said it had to be 1st gear double low range to run 5.13s, they work just as well in high range.

so shift

I'll mention that to the guys at the bogs. They'll be able to save thousands that they would have put into their motors. :haha:

I run the mud alot (deep stuff) with 39" boggers, 4.56's and a (dare I say this on a Chevy website?!?!) moderately built 440 in a 1ton truck. I have plenty of power, but would do better with a stroker big block. My other truck has 35's with 4.56's and a stock tbi 350. It has plenty of power for trails, but sucks in the mud. Parts break all the time in the mud - depends on how hard you run your truck.

need a straight six

Yup,you should probably swap that 350 out for a little six cylinder and just regear it. What I guess they aren't getting is that if you don't have enough power you can't use 2nd or 3rd gear. You'll just go brrurruuurrrrr straight down.

Define "parts break"

What we're getting at is that you should be able to clean 40's with 5.13 gears. If as you suggest RPM's are untolerably high than an upshift isn't out of the question. I'm running 4.56's and 40's and they clean fine short of pete bogs.

Ring gear might be too thick to clear it. I've heard conflicting reports but that's supposedly what prevents anyone from making super low gears for the 14.

we aren't getting at the same thing

What I was originally getting at was the power issue.Being able to spin big tires fast enough to move through the mud is NOT the same as moving them fast enough to get them to spin the mud off.Throwing as much mud(through tire speed)as possible is what gets a truck through the deep stuff.Gearing down a weak motor is ok for crawling but isn't gonna cut it in the mud.Shifting to a higher gear won't work cause when you do you lose the torque you would have produced with your lower axle gearing.I don't even know if this guy wants bigger tires to run mud or not.

Broken stub shafts, grenaded locking hubs, D44 balljoints separating, broken ring and pinion teeth, rear axle shafts, transfer case inputs/output shafts,etc.etc. And I am talking about Dana 60/205/14 bolt, 35 spline outers. Dana 44s and 10 bolt front ends will not survive very long unless you just putt around.

Whoa wait timeout....you're breaking beefed 1-ton gear with 35's in mud?

Oh no way. My d.d. has the 35's. My other truck has a built big block and 39" boggers on it. My friends run from 39 - 44" tires, mostly Boggers as well. With that said, we tend to be extremely hard on our trucks.

Ok that I can understand. Deep sticky stuff can wreak more hell than most people think on 1/2 ton stuff.

ive got 35s with 3.73s in 10b's right now and let it rip in some pretty deep stuff and to my surprise havent broken anything.

i do plan on a d60 when i find one close for a fair price. my engine has 123k miles on it, so i dont really feel like dumpin a ton of money into it. what do you guys think about those gm 350 crate motors? nothing to crazy, one around 300hp or so. this wont happen until i have the d60, x-over and hydro assist. why does everything fun have to be so expensive?????

anybody who has a V8, and most here do, have more than enough power to churn big tires through mud, it just has to be geared correctly to do so.

its also my dd to school :D so nothing toooooo crazy...yet

im keeping the 10b open for sure, its only going in mud, no such thing as rocks in northern va.

that pretty much settles it. its a DD with occasional mud duty. gears are the answer.

i do try to hit the pits as often as i can, once every week or two, when school doesnt get in the way. unfortunately the pits around here arent super huge, im hoping i go to a college that has lot of good ones near campus, and by then ill have a locked d60 to go with it :D

Swamper balanced?

You got your swampers balanced? I just bought 38.5X15.5" TSL Radials from Kal tire and they said they couldnt balance them and its not worth it. Are they bullsh*ting me here or what?
thanks
