Yes,I learned that quick when I tuned up my '69 GTO for the first time, and routed the plug wires in chevy order!...flames out the carb!..
I had a '78 400 SB from a Suburban in my 77 GMC,it was a "never opened up" motor that had only 83,000 on it..never had the valve covers off it till I found a pair of M/T ones at the dump's metal pile one day!...thing ran stronger than a '74 454 I had in the truck previously...I ended up parting that truck out after the th350 lost reverse, and I decided the frame was too thin to bother putting another tranny in it--the motor was sold for 150 bucks...needed money bad,so it went cheap...
The 400 Pontiacs are rare as hens teeth around here now,any you find running for sale bring high prices...I do see some 400 SB Chevy's around still, but not cheap--600 bucks and up at least for a good one now..
The 400 pontiac I had in the GTO was a YS 1969 block, which was one step below a Ram Air,it was 350 HP and I dont know the torque rating offhand, but it pulled harder than the 454 and 400 chevy motors I had ,it had 4.10 gears behind it and a TH400...
Its not all that hard to swap in a different GM V8 like an Olds,Pontiac ,Caddy or Buick, its a pain more because the starter and altenator and fuel pump are on opposite sides,so new wires and lines need to be run,and the motor mounts must either be "made" up, or some type of factory ones adapted (an example is the 350 Olds diesels motor mounts can be used to swap a Olds gas V8 in a square body, but those are just about impossible to find now, being a 2 year affair..you can use car mounts and make plates to swap in a buick,Olds or Caddy engine...
Some late 70's and early 80's TH350's had the "universal" bell housings with both bolt patterns, and Jegs or Summit sells adapters for about 75 bucks that allows a chevy tranny to bolt up to a non-chevy GM engine...one of the "baddest" off road trucks I have seen locally ran a '68 Buick 430 engine,I dont know about the valve trains but who knows if small block valves and guides fit--Ford 302's use the same part number for piston rings as a 350 chevy!...
Personally the engine I'd love to have in a GM square body would be a '66 Buick Nailhead 425..I had two 401's and both had awesome low end torque,I could bark third gear at 65 mph in a 3 ton Electra 225 with the 401 and the switch pitch TH400 tranny ..they are easy to work on too,and rarely need to be..here you'll only see one at a car show though,if your very lucky...that was the last year for a nailhead...after that the 400 Buicks, 430's and 455's took over..Olds had some good engines in the 60's too,the 425 and 455 were probably the best ones..
