454 Advice

The 454,s I have built for a truck with a lopey cam where 2-wheel drive trucks, which I drove on the open road a lot where they where running at higher RPM's. These engines definitely where not real responsive on the bottom end when leaving a stop light. These cam's where in the mid 290 (advertised) degree duration, with about .490 lift. I had the head spring area machined opened up for larger single spring (with inner damper spring), in order to run more lift without having to go to dual springs, which are rough on cams for street use. I had this one 1977 C30 with a built 454 go 85-MPH for 2-hours straight on the open road without breaking a sweat.

Like what carb? Truck avengers are not designed to be used on the highway and edelbrock has yet to build a carb worth a squit of shit so as I see it you could use a qjet, tbi or propane.

The only way I would recommend a Q-jet is if you are going to run a mechanical fuel pump. If you go all out on a an electrical fuel pump and regulators, why waist that upgraded fuel system on a Q-jet, when you could get a performance carb specifically designed for off road use, which is capable of taking full advantage of an up-graded fuel system. If you do go with a mechanical fuel pump system, make sure you get a quality pump with dual diaphragms, and not a cheap single diaphragm pump. By the picture you posted of the engine you are building, you have a ways to go before you need to start worrying about carburetors.
Why would you need a high GPH electric fuel pump and regulators on an oval port big block that is almost completely stock?Would the cam he is wanting to run warrant that? Quadrajets are better for fuel mileage as well, if 454 and fuel mileage can be used in the same sentence.

As I stated earlier I picked up a holley 750 to run for a carb instead of the 770 truck avenger so the 770 will be going up for sell and is no longer in the the picture. The truck will rarely ever see offroad use and will run down the highway and in town most of the time. It will be used as a toy for me and the family to cruise around in and go to local car shows. Fuel mileage doesnt bother me as i have several cars to drive that get good gas mileage as daily drivers. Anything above 6mpg will be fine with me

Progress on the heads today. Ill be going through the block this week and reassembling next weekend. Hopefully be up and running in a little over a weeks time.

Yes I saw that. I was just trying to figure out what an electric fuel pump and regulators had to do with a relatively mild combination. Enjoy your truck , hope every thing works out.

Ill just be running a mechanical fuel pump for now. If I ever need more power than Ill start upgrading but Im not looking for a speed machine. I have a built corvette, eagle talon tsi, and srt4 neon if I want to go fast, plus a porsche but that is technically the wifes lol.
