So in my recent web surfing on Pirate and CK5 i am thinking i want to put a 454 in my truck. Like they say there is no replacment for displacment, my questions are how much would it kill me to build a cheap one, if its even possible, or should i just freshen up a stock one and toss it in?

Im going to be building an "on the cheap" big block for my cutlass. It starts with a good core you know is/was a running motor that doesnt have a thrown rod, spun bearing, rusty cylinders etc.

The key to keeping costs low is retaining stock rods and crank. That saves you in the realm of $800-$2000. Just remember your not gonna hit some ridiculous numbers without investing serious dough.

My recipe for a somewhat budget big block, mind you mine is geared towards going fast:

Gen V good complete motor: $150 (Retaining stock crank, rods, timing cover, valve covers, oil pan)

Howards retro hydro roller kit: $600 (If you stay flat tap your looking at $250 here)

Dome Keith Black hyper pistons w/ rings: $380

Machine work, Check block, bore, hone: $300 (Add $200-$350 to have heads done if you keep stock heads)

Intake: $200

Ill be getting Pro Comp aluminum oval ports assembled and set up for roller cam: $1150

Figure another $500 for little **** like waterpump, gaskets, bearings, etc

They arent cheap. If your looking for cheap budget power do a vortec 383.

Damn sorry guys i posted this in the driveway and for the life of me i cant figure out how to delete this son of a B...

just PM a moderator and they'll move it for you

A buddy of mine had a 383 he built cheap for his jeep a while back. Said overall he only spent $1500 on it, all ebay parts and stuff he kinda dug up here and their. He beat the living snot out of it(no joke) and when it finally blew it was the scat crank that went out.

I would also say 383 if your goin for power and "cheap" as a relative term. I dont think a big block will be cheap at all compared to what you could build a big small block...:dunno:
