well i was on the sulfer creek run with MNORBY this last weekend. my truck was running just fine , a lil rich but not bad, we started up the trail and i started noticing what sounded like lifters ticking.(the motor has solid lifters in it) i didnt think to much about it just figured id adjust the valves when i got home. well about 3/4 of the way up the trail the ticking was getting noticably worce then on the way back it started mkaing a squeeking noise and sounded like it was missing hard at idle. well it made it back to the trailer and the next day we pulled the drivers side valve cover and found 1 push rod sticking through the rocker. 1 push rod just missing, no were to be found from the top. and like 3 bent valves.:doah:
some of the rockers looked dry like they weren't getting oil. we cranked on the starter for a lil bit to see if they were getting oil but nothing. so i am baffled with what wend wrong. i wonder if there was somthing i coulda done to prevent this from happening???

The solid lifter cam was the cuase of NAPA. i Ordered a roler cam and lifters
and they sent me solid insted n wouldnt take em back. so they sat in my tool box for a year and i finally just threw them in to see what would happen. i wasn't expecting this to happen though.
the moter prolly only had 15 hours on it since the cam swap and i adjusted the valves 3 times cause i kept hearing lifter tick. i adjusted them at 10 and 20 thousandths like my cam papers said to.

Did this engine originally have roller cam? If so the solid lifters and cam may have choked the oil flow to the top end. Usually don't want to switch to the solid type from a roller type.

Big blocks have a some history of eating cams. If you go back with a solid I would get the lifters with the little hole in them for the cam lobe to get additional oiling. It is very possible that the cam did not break in properly and eventually ate the lobe.

Running rich means that extra fuel is getting into the oil which dilutes the oil and causes the oil to lose it's lubricating properties. This could have been your problem. If the oil is black that means it has fuel in it. The only thing that turns oil black is fuel dilution. I don't care if you only have 5 miles on your oil, if it's black it needs changing. Just keep that in mind for the future and you can prevent future failures from this scenerio.
