time for me to speak up about my BBC.... I have a nearly identical setup as my friends truck, except his is lighter, (1/2 ton 76 suburban as opposed to my 3/4 ton 77 suburban) same tire, and gearing, same TH400 tranny, and about the same age motor as his ( mines about 6 months newer) but, his is a 350 that gets 8 MPG, and mine is a 454 that gets 13, even with my damn lead foot, and with a trailer behind it. ( did scoutcamp in the mountains, and got 13 MPG from phoenix metro to the whitemountains and back, hauling a boat) this is with a standard quadrajet on it, as is his.
besides, everyone* loves the sound a bigblock puts out, *(except the weaker neighbors, and prissy people from my old neighborhood) especialy one running 1/3 as much exhaust as it should have ( 4 foot of pipe from engine to cherry bombs, ending under the middle doors on the sub) besides, read these numbers and weap, or something:
540 Ft Lbs @ 1400 RPM,
298 HP @ 3300 RPM,
top speed: (guessing by tach readings, ) 120+ ( still had throttle left, and only cranking out at 3800 rpm... can you say tall rear gears? )
Cost:
-engine 1400, after core ( had a bad crank, otherwise it would have been 1000)
-Competition RV cam ( not sure number, or grind) 120 bucks
-about 2 weeks in the AZ sun to get it preped, and installed, then removed, and returned after a bearing failed, then a week in december to drop it back in, and finish it out.
just finished the 10,000 mile breakin, so now I can do some serious stuff with it, like find out what its 0-60 MPH is, and what it can run the quarter in... I can beat most things off the line, and hold up pretty decently to several sporty looking cars in my day to day driving... besides, I get so many thumbs up, and nods from people who know, and appreciate the sound of the engine.... I've debated getting a complete exhaust system under it, but I don;t want to lose that sound.... hehe I'll have to try and record it or sompin.... it just says `MEAN' all over it...
