time for me to speak up about my BBC.... I have a nearly identical setup as my friends truck, except his is lighter, (1/2 ton 76 suburban as opposed to my 3/4 ton 77 suburban) same tire, and gearing, same TH400 tranny, and about the same age motor as his ( mines about 6 months newer) but, his is a 350 that gets 8 MPG, and mine is a 454 that gets 13, even with my damn lead foot, and with a trailer behind it. ( did scoutcamp in the mountains, and got 13 MPG from phoenix metro to the whitemountains and back, hauling a boat) this is with a standard quadrajet on it, as is his.

besides, everyone* loves the sound a bigblock puts out, *(except the weaker neighbors, and prissy people from my old neighborhood) especialy one running 1/3 as much exhaust as it should have ( 4 foot of pipe from engine to cherry bombs, ending under the middle doors on the sub) besides, read these numbers and weap, or something:
540 Ft Lbs @ 1400 RPM,
298 HP @ 3300 RPM,
top speed: (guessing by tach readings, ) 120+ ( still had throttle left, and only cranking out at 3800 rpm... can you say tall rear gears? )
Cost:
-engine 1400, after core ( had a bad crank, otherwise it would have been 1000)
-Competition RV cam ( not sure number, or grind) 120 bucks
-about 2 weeks in the AZ sun to get it preped, and installed, then removed, and returned after a bearing failed, then a week in december to drop it back in, and finish it out.

just finished the 10,000 mile breakin, so now I can do some serious stuff with it, like find out what its 0-60 MPH is, and what it can run the quarter in... I can beat most things off the line, and hold up pretty decently to several sporty looking cars in my day to day driving... besides, I get so many thumbs up, and nods from people who know, and appreciate the sound of the engine.... I've debated getting a complete exhaust system under it, but I don;t want to lose that sound.... hehe I'll have to try and record it or sompin.... it just says `MEAN' all over it...

I have had all of the Chevy Big blocks and I hate them all. They run hot and wear out valve guides. You are lucky if you get 100,000 miles on one. My current 454 is a Holley MPFI injected and it still get around 8.5-9 mpg. I will never have another one. Infact I have two 454 and they will both be sold when I find replacements for them.

If you hate them so bad, why not just give those 454's to me and I will be more than happy to get them out of your site!!!

<font color=purple> I know there's no replacement for displacement but small blocks are cheaper and seem to lasts longer than big blocks ......... Don't get me wrong, I like the big blocks too but small blocks seem easier to deal with.

Like I said when I get enough money togather I will be installing a Caddy 500 in my 74 truck and in a year or two if the 454 holds out in the dually I am going to put a diesel in it. I will glady give you first dibs on them.

Yeah, I agree too, but they just dont quite match up to the BBC's. I have had quite a few small blocks and while they never performed like any BBC I have had, yes, they were cheap to work on and easy too. But, they can be just as bad as a BBC or any other motor too!!
wink.gif
I have never blown up or spun a bearing in a BBC, but have blown and spun bearings in SBC's. Guess I have better luck with the BBC's.

A buddy of mine is a Caddy freak. He has a motor or some motors. He tries to collect the 500's. Matter of fact, he sold one to Grumpy a couple months ago. Maybe we could work out something in trades?

<font color=purple> It all boils down to how well they're both built.......even though the on;y real advantage that's undeniable is the lesser cost for parts for a small block.

it has a carb on it and a th400, 4.56 gears and 35in tires. i get 10mpg.

Yeah, I have found that out too. Those $$$$ that were spent, not just on the name brand high dollar parts, but on the labor and machine work, are normally the better, longer lasting motors than those who just purchase rebuild kits and take everything apart to clean them and proceed to put the new stuff back into the old stuff. I have seen that happen too many times to count!!!

Generally, my idea of a damn good motor that will last and has been properly built, will cost anywhere from 2 to 4 grand. But, I have seen such motors go bad too, even during the break-in period!!

Hmmm the 81 burb has a 454 and just went over 200K .
I guess I better belt out taps for the ol girl.
It is using 2 quarts per oil change and the oil pressure is at a horrible 55 psi idleing when it's warm.
And it won't stop roasting the 33's when I plant my foot in it.
Ya I hate them BBC's.
Then there is the problem with the 73 pick up with a 463.
That friggin speedo only goes to 100.
That and I hate getting slammed in the seat when I give it some go. Friggin big blocks.

my truck's not dirty, it's earth tone paint

Ok, kwitcherbitchin, and pull them motors out and give them to me!!!

<font color=purple> o.k. , settle down....... I'm not ramming on big blocks, just saying that small blocks are cheaper to build.
