454 vs. 383 which is more reliable??

And I realy hate it when they sit at 195-200 in heavy traffic.
Ok maybe the auto-meter gages are faulty.

Why do I get the feeling this thread is going straight to hell, just like my thread on the 'non-4x4' forum, you know which one!!!

Thats nothing!!! On hot days like we have this week, I can drive around town slowly or idle and the damn temp. rises up to 210 degrees!!!

Think its about time to clean and flush the radiator, install a new thermostat, and check the fan clutch!!!

I've polled alot of people running 383's and their mpg are as good as the 350 or better (the more power, less work theory).
I'm going 383 too mainly because I wnat to be able to afford to drive it after I build it! With gas at $76.9 cents/litre ($2.90/gal); I need all the mileage help I can get!

I agree BB is the ultimate & I don't think anyone would really argue but it's not always the best choice!

Ok everybody, I have the solution. Someone build a big block and a small block using the same quality machining and comparable quality engine parts whether they be stock rebuilds, or modified and I'll take the time to put them in by Blazer and test each one out for you all......but which ever one I like the best, I get to keep

hey '90, I did just what you are talking about within the last 3 years. Bought a '78 2wd burby with a 454 for $300 bucks. It had about 140,000 miles. After pulling the bearing caps I realized I shouldn't have tore it apart. The bearings were like new. The cam was a different story though. To make a long story short, I had the BB and a SB machined and balanced at the same shop and built them myself. I've had both of them in a '79 burby 4x4. If you like torque, go with a BB, I liked the SB better in the dunes. The SB is still in the burby and the BB is on the floor waiting for the 400 SB in the K5 to die. As far as longevity, a four core radiator and an oil cooler will do wonders. It all boils down to what you would like to answer when someone asks what you are running for a motor. I'd rather answer big block any day.

K..when I was around 200 miles, I got 10 to the gallon. At 375 miles on the motor I'm getting 13. This is city and highway combined. Still not completly broke in, but the milage keeps getting better and better and the motor is starting to turn loose it's fury

.
Like I said, this motor retails for about 2K and I'm getting as much power as I'll ever need. This motor will tear something up if I put too much strain on the truck so I don't need any more power. Even without it's full break in, it's still plenty powerful. It's got 3.73's with 33's and I can step on the brake and step on the gas just a little and it will break the tire loose. In my opinion, I've got the best of both worlds. I've got a lot of power and pretty good gas milage (and it's not completly broke in yet) in an easy to work on with cheaper parts small block. I just can't see the point in having a BB for what I'm using the blazer for. That blazer will climb anything (of course traction and the edelbrock performer are the limitations). I've got the HP if I want to do a mud bog and I've got the torque for rock crawling. It don't get much better!

She's definatly a peppy little thang!

I might have a BB in a race car someday...but not in my truck.

I've got a mind like a . . . a . . . what's that thing called?

Oh, and in this Texas heat (already has gone over 100) idling, she stays at 190.

man muddin, sounds like you have a nice setup! sounds perfect for rescueing those college boys in Heeps huh??? LOL

actually, I'm planning on pulling some camping trailers with this thing. If it was just being used for off-road and daily I'd probably go with a 383, but I got a bit more to it then that.

I'm surprised that no one took more note of this:
In reply to:

540 Ft Lbs @ 1400 RPM,
298 HP @ 3300 RPM

This is what a big block is all about. This thing is putting out more torque just off of idle than most small blocks can do at more than twice the RPM. If you want serious grunt, there's only one place to shop.

My 350 will break the tires loose without holding the brake, hell you dont even have to go past half throttle. BTW I'm running 33" Swamper TSLs and either 4:10 or 3:73 gears.
