Possibly swapping out my 350 TBI and installing a 454 TBI. Any reason not to keep the 700R4 I currently have?

I like the OD and have not had any problems with it so far. Will the 700R4 hold up to the 454 or should I move to a different transmission?

Right now, with the 700R4, I'm running 5:13 gears with 37" tires and cruise 60 mph at 2000 rpm. It has great pep to get up and go so it's not sluggish at all.

What would I expect from a TH400? 4L80e?

More cubic inches, more HP and torque. I have an opportunity to get a 454 with low miles at a decent price. Which, at this moment, is making me feel kinda giddy inside. I've wanted a 454 for a long time and thought the bigger motor would help move this heavy beast a lot better than the 350.

And gas mileage is not a concern. I knew owning a K5 would not get me great gas mileage and I'm fine with that.

Wait a few months and ask @mrk5 these questions

His will be same engine/trans/gears/tire height

Oh and I voted NV4500

I would keep the 700R4. I have had one behind my big block for close to 40K.
Mine has a Trans-go shift kit and a billet input drum, but all of the other parts are stock GM. It has a furnace brazed converter.
The low first gear adds to off the line acceleration, but the gear splits aren't as nice as a TH400.

I have a 700r4 that will be living behind a low miles 454 rebuild that is using stock parts. The only thing that gives me pause is that I plan to tow a 4000lbs camper some with it. Otherwise I wouldn't be worried about it.

I have a big cooler and Hughes towmaster torque converter. I figure I'll keep an eye on temps and may have to baby it for a year if it looks like the 700r4 won't hold up. I may also change out the fluid for some nice Amsoil stuff to help things out.

Well, it looks like I could keep the 700r4. If it gives me trouble I could swap to the 4L80e since it's suppose to be for more torque and hauling/towing. I really don't think I'll be doing anything towing.

The only actual towing will happen when it's towing my butt and some gear on the trails at Blazer Bash '17. If it can handle that without any issues then I'm good with keeping the 700r4.

As for the NV4500, I would like to keep it automatic but I'd consider using that tranny if I went to manual. Thanks for the input.

September is coming way too fast. Lots to do.

That's my plan. We're bringing our camper to Blazer Bash but we'll probably tow it over with my work truck since I'm planning to hit a couple of the more difficult trails this year. Want to minimize the load on it.

Hopefully come May I can provide real world feedback.

I have a 92 4L60 behind a HO454. I built the trans 15 years ago and its been behind a big block for 12 years now. My current BBC is 500 ft/lbs of torque. It was so long ago I cant remember for sure what all I put in it but the basics are, Increased 3-4 clutch pack disc with Alto red frictions and Koleen steels, Alto red wide 2-4 band, Sonnax smart shell, pump upgrades, larger servos for more apply pressure and lots of other things I cant recall off the top of my head. I guess my point is I dumped about 1200 bucks worth of parts into it. It seems like the input drum was about 500 bucks.

I towed a 6000 lb trailer for several years with 33 inch tires and 3.08 gears. With the big block. I know, stupid move! Its held up great and I run the crud out of it. It spends time at the sand dunes getting the living **** run out of it. I like the throttle. After all, isn't that why we would have a BBC?

Anyways, a 700 can do the job but it is taxing it to the max and in stock form it might be a bomb.

You will have to figure out how to make the TV cable work on the 454 TBI unit as there is no provision since a 700R4 was never installed behind a big block. Don't expect the trans to last very long either depending on how you use the skinny pedal.

In regards to the TV hookup. When I was planning to use TBI on my 454 I was going to grind the arm off the 350TBI unit and the 454TBI and then weld the 350TBI onto the 454TBI. That's what I found others had done. Some also just cut and welded on the needed piece of the arm but I liked the idea of swapping the whole thing.

I thought that some carburetors had that stud in a bolt on?

Both hook to the TV cables that i have on the shelf. Two different mounting stud sizes.

Are they worth their weight in gold????
:D:D:haha:

Look at Quadra - jets....

Problem is there's no where to put that stud.

Didn't know that!!!!
Well crap!
I did find on Summit's website dhat Edelbrock sells that stud as well. But I can't figure out how to link it....

That is exactly how I cured my issue when I installed a 454TBI unit on my 350.

I wouldn't think a used high miles 700R4 would be a good candidate but if it were built with some durability improvements you should be OK provided you drive in a sane fashion. Like others have said, swap the linkage arms on the throttle bodies and fab up a tv cable bracket and you should be good to go.

That's going to be a problem. I don't plan on driving it in a sane fashion, some of the time. But I am thinking about getting a 4l80e and keeping it ready for that reason. :whistle2:

Is there a certain year of 4l80e that I should look for?

It doesn't matter if it's a good transmission or not because I can rebuild it. Just didn't know if there was a set of years that are better or stronger than other years. The 700R4 has newer years that are better to rebuild so that's why I was wondering.

In my opinion, the pre 1996 units seem to have the least amount of hard parts failures, and the cores are more plentiful and less expensive. But, no matter what you end up with you will want to apply updates and upgrades where applicable.
