465/205 ?\'s

Alright, I just bought a 465/205 combo from a late 70's pickup. What do I need to check out in this thing before I install it in my 90 Jimmy? I'm also going to a 14b rear and some sort of 8-lug front when I find it. Give me some tips on what I need. Thanks, Ash

Since you posted here in ORD forum , shall we presume you are wanting to install the doubler?

Or are you looking for advice on how to rebuild/recondition the 465/205 before you put it in your rig?

Well I was referring to reconditioning before I put it in, but the Doubler info could be well used also /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hey lets go wheelin! Anyways I would check the obvious stuff first like the seals,and shift the tranny.it should shift freely but may be a little difficult into granny,thats normal.Check the input shaft bearing retainer,where the throwout bearing rides,should be smooth with no grooves or burrs.These things are tough as nails and really shouldnt be alot wrong but without tearing it down to check condition of bearings and gears if there was something wrong with it that isnt obviuos you cant tell without running it..................Mines out of a 79 and ive gone through my first clutch.lord knows how many cluthes before mine and it still runs flawlessly!

you should seperate the 2 and check the drive sleeve and the2 shafts for wear,it seems to be one of the mostcommon things on that combo,cause its probably a 10 spline ....

If there is any wear, is there any way to beef it up? Or where could i get the stock replacement?

We carry new drivesleeves and have good used input gears in stock. An output shaft for the SM465 would probably be a new part from us.
