had my 86 k5 for 7 years and it never bothered me but my brother drove it the other day and he question why it seems like when in any gear (including neutral) when you completly let off the gas, the truck slows down like it has a parachute attached to it.

i did a emissions test in college, and part of the test was to take it to 80 and let it coast to a stop. well it went from 80 to 5 so quick everyone thought that i had my foot on the brake.

now i watched other trucks do the same test and it took them 3 times as long to slow down.

i hardly have to use my brakes when slowing down and im just curious if this it normal (only 4 speed truck i have ever owned)

now its not brake drag, cause i went from 10 bolts with 33's and 4.10's to completly rebuilt d60's with 35's and 4.56s and it does exactly the same thing.

new motor and drivelines the only thing that is the same it the 200k mile 465/208 combo

like i said it doesnt bother me im just curious to what yall think. i mean you let off the gas and it drags you down fast.

with 4.56's,, the driveline rotational mass is turning a lot faster than stock.

all that rotating mass causes parasitic drag when turning - driveshafts etc turning 4.56 times per wheel revolution of 1,,,plus the transfer case gears,,plus the transmission gears/ countershaft..... It's a lot of drag....

especially if the front end doesn't freewheel-- ie: no locking hubs

Its shouldnt do it in neutral but its normal in gear. Between low gearing and if you have a high compression motor you'll come to a stop mighty fast.

the truck is a parachute btw...When I let off the gas, in neutral w/ 39's it will come to a stop quick, due the the drag of the tires and the fact the truck is not aerodynamic plus the rotational drag of driveline components and a transfercase...

There's a lot of rotating mass in a K5, especially with the big gears of the sm465. Ya figure, transmission, transfercase, driveshafts, axles, brakes, tires, it all adds up! Takes a lot to keep all that spinning! Mine loses speed pretty quickly too! You've also gotta figure, 33's and 4.10s or 35's and 4.56s are pretty low gear sets per tire size so, that's gonna effect things too!

manuals do that. mu DD is a 5 speed and i rarely use the brakes.just let off the gas and it slows down quit i bit.do your tires have aggresive tread?when i run the boggers i don't roll back at traffic lites.with the Terra grapplers i drift back pretty fast.:eek1:

im running 35 inc bf mud terrian km2

if its normal great, i just had a 90 sub with the same gears and tire size but a 700r4 and it didnt slow down near as fast so i was just wondering

I think its just a normal thing, the off ramp to get to my house is fairly long, in my malibu (newer one I am not cool) I can pop the thing in neutral and still have to use the brakes fairly decent to stop, going about 30 mph when I need to apply the brakes from 70 usually.

In Horton (my wheeler 44" tires auto 4.56 gears) it pretty much is nearly stopped when I hit the stop sign. I am usually at 60 or 65 when I leave the highway.

In my 73 flatbed dually 2wd with 4.56s and a 454 and 465 if I popped it in neutral I would still have to give it some gas to get to the stop sign, if I just left it in 4th about 75% of the way down I would need to shift and give it a little gas just to get to the stop sign. One time I got the truck to around 85 and popped it in nuetral still coudln't coast to the stop sign

Dont worry mine does that too, doesnt seem that bad though but i rarely go over 50 in 3rd(according to the speedo)

then again i have 3.73's and 35 bfg ats

what about with the clutch depressed? Neutral rolls as it should for me, the other gears slow down quickly obviously.

I would blame the rolling resistance of larger tires, especially if one or more might be low on air...(provided the brakes, wheel bearings and axles have nothing binding or dragging that is)..those big tires are heavy and larger contact area of rubber to the road makes for a lot of friction to overcome..

If it does it in neutral, I'd be looking for something. That doesn't sound right to me at all.

My blazer has 44's and a doubler and 465 and if you take it out of gear it coasts down pretty gradual. Usually good braking required to get it all stopped.

Shop one ton is the same way. Also has a 465.

I'd be looking for things that are hotter than they should be. You have some friction somewhere. Jack it up and start turning parts and see what is difficult to turn. Could be some mileage in this issue for ya.
