well I just swapped out my465/208 for a 465/205 combo in my 72' blazer today to fix my driveshaft problems.

It started off that my help cancelled on me first thing this morning and I was up to pulling and installing these heavy fuggers myself. My first thought was-Ill just pull the top cover and see if the 32spine output is easy enough to swapp with the 10spline output for the 205, That way I wouldnt have to try wrestling the tranny.

I took all the top cover bolts of my soon to be installed 465 and couldnt get the cover off, I got the gearshifter and tried all the gears to see if it needed to be in a certain one to remove it-No worky, So I undid the tranny hump, Wheeled in the cherrypicker and removed the tranny and case, Installed 205 setup- Everything went smooth, I went to install the hump and shifter and went to put it in neutral so that I could install the driveshaft, and I cant get it out of gear? I put a crowbar into the x-case u-bolts and can turn the motor over, so I know its not bound up. The hydraulic clutch is yet to be installed.

Is this a problem or do I need to wait until I get the clutch working?

did you say that you pulled the top cover and thus the shift forks off?

If so...you installed it with it in a gear that would be your problem...Wehn i replaced all the seals in my 465, and to check the insides i did this and couldnt figure it out.

well It looks like being a paid member has paid off again....I love the search button. I pulled the shifter out and stuck a big scredriver in and re-aligned the notches, Works like a champ now!

huh...it might be possible that you did pop it out of gear...mine i had to put it in reverse to get it on/off...

is there a way you can spin the input shaft and see what the output does? kinda check yourselft and see whats happening?

To get the cover off, it needs to be half way between neutral and reverse. The reverse fork gets hung up on one of the gears inside if you are either all the way into gear, or in neutral.

Should come off with relatively little effort. While you are in there, check the gears to see if they have excessive movement on the mainshaft's sintered bushings, check to see if the snap rings are worn on the countershaft, check on the syncros, and check out the shift forks to make sure that they still have a bit of the nylon material on the tips, not that it is just metal on metal.
