looking at gettins some tires for a truggy i am building. specs are:
454 running on propane, turbo 400, 10.3 4 speed atlas; dana 60 with detroit and 5.86's, 4340 shafts, 35 spline stubs and drive flanges with a welded dana 70 rear; 56" in front and 52" in rear.
so my question; which tire:
47" ltb on H1 wheels
49" irok on H1 wheels
46" military michelin tires on some 20's

Thread cleaned up for ya Jeff...

Rene

why thank you kind sir :D

a little background, i traded a set of 39.5 boggers for this with a 454/350/205. when i took the guy the tires, i also took a 60/14 out of a cucv and he installed them for me. he says he built it to clear 47's.

and of course the obligatory picture:

I like the ltbs. The Michelin would be nice but you would have to but 20s and they aren't cheap.

I think the bigger tires are cool, but they look pretty weird with the smaller rim sizes, particularly the 15" rim flavor. I think anything over a 40" needs a larger rim. By the time you get to a 47-54" tire a 20" rim is probably better...

Then again, if you can get a smokin deal on something that changes things.

Looks like a cool beginning!!

LTB's

Iroks are too balloon looking, and the Michelins are too hard.

Exactly what I was going to say, 47's (to me at least) would be the perfect size for an offroad only rig, bigger then 44's , but not crazy big like 54's. Wide but not to wide and I would have to assume they would be much lighter then the michelins and much flexier as well

I vote 47's, imo these are the sexiest "big" tire on the market. I bought a set to run on my K5 but they were just too big for me, I would have had to lift it ~6" more or cut the ends off the core support - this doesn't seem to be a problem for your project. :D

Beware, those tires are HEAVY! My last set of tires were 44 TSL's and the 47's were noticably bigger and heavier. I would venture to say the empty 47's were heavier than my 43's w/ H1 wheels. Definitely parts breakers. :D :doah:

They are heavy, but they work Soo well! I love mine. I have the 40" flavor and they are about 150 lb per corner on Allied beadlocks.

Another note. I am not sure what the 47's are listed as for width, but the 40's are supposed to be 16" wide and they are really about 13 so thats a plus to me.

Well, width listed is section width, not tread width and it's usually specified on a particular rim size. Narrower rim narrows the section width too. Section width is the widest part of the tire.

I have wheeled with guys who have all three you are thinking about.

Forget the military tires there tread compound is very hard and sidewalls are pretty stiff. Surplus ones can be very old and have sidewall problems

The 47 ltbs work pretty good from what I have seen thats what I would go with. 47s don't seem that much bigger than 44s but 49s are just crazy big (not that the 47s aren't pretty insane too)

The LTBs are narrower than the Iroks too which I like.

Both snap 60 parts like it twernt nothing. After good chro mo shafts your ring and pinion becomes the weak point. 14 bolts tend to break the pinion too but they take way more abuse than the 60s do. I have heard of guys having good luck with cyroing their ring and pinion that seems to help.

I agree with Rene if given a choice in rim size it would definatly be a 20 (which adds even more weight in most cases) but that takes the LTB out for ya.

There are some 49" Iroks on Intercos blems page for 450 in a 16.5 rim flavor.

Any of these tires are gonna break junk if you get a good deal on em go with that!

We have 42" Irok's on the Bronco and I am not impressed with them at all so I don't recommend them. The LTB's from what I gather are on a national back order, a friend of mine runs them and they do ok but I think the smaller LTB's work much better. Boggers have their place and seem to do well but I have never seen anybody running the 54's. The 47" Pitbull Growler seem to work well also.

I have two friends running the pitbull growler, they do really well in almost all situations both are running the 47s

Definitely another tire to consider and it does come in a 20" rim

I am running pitbull rockers and love them

Yeah I waited awhile to get my LTB's. The release date was a year late and they sold out right away. I kept calling around until I found a set at Natl tire.

Let me clarify, the 47's are on back order. I was going to go with the 40" LTB but decided to go to 42" Rockers. As of now I think we are going to try the 42" BFG Krawlers on the Bronco when they become available.

well i was in the same boat as you and belive it or not i went with 46 inch claws.for the price i paid i have no problems cutting them up and ive heard people waiting 6 months to get 47s.i have about 1400 bucks in the whole setup.

all in all the sidewalls are "puncture resistant" and the tread is SOFT.way softer than any tsls ive ever had.havnt had them on the trail yet so we will see.
