4in LIFT WITH 35s. NEED GEARS????

Yea, just got my lift on today and my 35s,test drive tomorrow. I guess I just wont use over drive until I get some gears. Ill post the rpm in 3rd at 65 tomorrow.

at 65 you'll be spinning 2200 in 3rd and 1500 in OD. overdrive is not going to work for you, in my experience. city driving is gonna kinda suck.....

My point was not about whether the site is worth $25. It was about offering info willingly to fellow members rather than telling them to subscribe and use search. I spend time on other sites that also cost money to get all the benefits. There's bound to be repeated questions. Not everyone comes on all the time or reads every post. The $25 is definitely worth it to support a place you can go and get more from than any magazine subscription,or three. Not evryone is out buying lift kits, tires, and bottled water these day. Some are parting one to build another and selling parts at swap meets to fund the passion they won't let a lousy economy take away from them. Some have it all on hold struggling to just keep their home, but won't give up on their dreams, and still come here to chat about it. Or better yet, offer the knowledge they've gained from as much as 40 or more years of playing with 4wds.
I know the diesels have different torque values. That's why I mentioned what motor I have,to help give some scope. I don't know what motor the OP has,but it makes a difference if it's a stock 305,400,LS6,or Ramjet 502. I'd say 4.10s are where the line is drawn with 35s,depending on what power you have. For me 3.42 is the line with stock sized tires and o/d. With anything 37" or over I don't even bother with o/d. It becomes self defeating, since tall tires raise your ratio as it is and gearing down to be able to use o/d is just spending money to end up where you started,IMO.

there happens to be a current thread on the same topic, more quite recently. repeated questions come from subscribing members too. it's a generic "do some work".

perhaps my attitude comes from the atmosphere at my Shovelhead forum....posting an intro goes a long way in our eyes over there, drive by info grabbing is kinda frowned upon by most......especially if one wants to be a part of the "community". searching for info takes up less bandwidth and gives thought to additional concerns that relate to the topic in question........i completely understand what you mean by not giving up dreams and hustling to build something, hell that's me right now. i could be a pain in the ass sometimes, but i do understand and try to help where i can. my Shovel site is the only one like it in the world and it's free too.

i haven't seen a thread about towing 9K lbs with a K5 lately :haha:God is good.

Ya know, I read his comments and got something completely different. My take on what he was saying was that in his opinion for 35's 4.10 is the line for him. Nothing taller than that ie: 3.73's.

Then he goes on to say for him 3.42's is the line for stock tires and OD. I'd agree with that. If you're gonna run stock tires and have OD anything taller than 3.42's ie: 3.08's is going to suck. Having a truck that came with 3.08's and OD, I agree!

Ideally you'd gear it as low as practical and have OD available, but in the real world being a bit tall on gears and not running OD gets you there too...and unless it's a rock crawler it isn't gonna hurt off road either.

Lastly...

you have a pm

this thread is starting to remind me of pirate4x4 :doah::popcorn:

lets all grow up and play nice boys. :sign22:

http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html play with this and see just what you got and can get.

and as for my setup i am going tbi350 full rollor motor / 4l80e/203/205/5.13 gears/38" tires.

this gets me a sweet setup.

stock i was 65mph and 3k rpm 4.10 and 235/85/16 tires.

now i am 65mph and droped 50 rpm in 3rd. then overdrive i am now 2200 rpm. this will get me as close to stock feel as i had before with lots of room for bigger tires later and still kick the little rice burrners on the street that think i will have stock gears and not move fast off the line. :haha:

For what its worth I do alright on 42's with 4.56's. 2300RPM doing 65 IIRC. TH400 behind a 6.2 diesel. I can go faster than that when im pissed off, ask yellowk20 :D

I missed whatever was said but, yeah,I meant it how Rene took it. Also said,"...depending on what power you have",which plays into it. Some rigs run double the torque of others. Then, there's automatic vs manual. My one truck runs a 5spd and I just use o/d when I'm rollin' along at 50+ (or a bit less down hill or all flat). That truck has 33s/4.10s,so I'm at about 2,250 rpm around 75

Ran the jimmy on I-state first time last night going to work,2200 at 65 in 3rd 1600 at 65 in od. Didnt stay in od very long though I put in back in drive.Thats with the stock 3.42s Still trying to decide what gear to go to.

not sure what gears are in the rear diff of this thing, but all stock 5.3/4L60e, 2005 Avalanche running at 65 mph it was turning 1700 rpm in OD. Holds overdrive just fine, hops out when needed for passing & whatnot. Guess I'll have to look at the paperwork and see if there is anything on there about rear gearing just for some sort of comparison.

Also going to check out what it's doing in 3rd gear at same speed, didn't think about it at the time...

OK - you've heard a lot of stuff here...and still seem undecided/confused.

Picking a ratio that's right for you is the important thing.

You might want to try the following by borrowing some rims/tires - it'll look absolutely ridiculous, but it'll let you know how different gears will feel without actually changing gearsets. You'd be mimicking the gear change using different tire sizes instead. Whether you can do this or not depends on how many lugs your truck has, if you can find someone (junkyard) willing to loan you the smaller tires, etc.

To see what 35" tires feel like with 4.10 gears, put some 30" tires (either 30x9.5R15 or P245/75-16) on your 3.42 axles. This should be easy as these are OEM tire sizes common today on trucks.

To see what 35" tires feel like with 4.56 gears, put some 26" tires (P205/70-15 car tires) on your 3.42 axles. This is a very common tire size for cars, but rims/fitment might be a tough issue :dunno:

Or just find someone with 35's and 4.10's or 4.56's and a smallblock/700R4 and ask to drive their truck.
