Someone must know this one. I can find overall dimensions (including tailhousing) but I haven't seen this particular dimension anywhere....and this is the one I need.

4L80E2.jpg

This is from the engine-side bellhousing to the 6-bolt mounting flange for the output shaft.

I want to compare this dimension to a TH400.

Can anyone help with this one? :dunno:

:usaflag:

EDIT:

4L80E = 26.5"
TH400 = 25.0"

I am pretty sure it is 3" longer than a t-400. When I swaped my4l80 into my blazer everything had to either be lengthened by 3" or shortened.

Thanks guys!

"Might as well" post the answer here so that future searches are fruitful....

So it looks like your answer is 1.5" longer. :D

Sounds like this will make your life a whole lot easier than the 6" you thought.

This doesn't even give the info he was looking for. Also, since when does a 4L80E have a 31 spline output?

Easy there killer.... :wink1:

He got me the right answer in 13 minutes flat. The "extra" stuff was I suppose just for "extra credit".

:haha:

those dont have dimensions? The reason i posted those also is because it looks to me like one is 32 1/2, 31 7/8 and 32 3/16. Not sure if that small a difference would be pertinent information.

I have no idea what the output spline count is, and since it wasn't part of the question I suppose it could easily be ignored.

The 4L80E is showing a case length of 26 1/2" and the TH400 case length of 25". Since there is no tail housing on a 4x4 trans he doesn't need the overall length or the front of case to trans mount which would be used if it was a 2WD trans.

That info looks wrong. I've seen them next to each other, and the 80E case looks a heck of a lot longer than a 400 case - more than 1.5" :what:

If the first chart is correct (and for now I'm going to assume it is) the overall length of the cases (including tailhousings) would be as follows

TH400:

29.0" w/ 4" tailhousing
34.0" w/ 9" tailhousing
38.0" w/13" tailhousing

4L80E:

32.5" w/ 6" tailhousing

My guess is that most people are comparing the 4" tailhousing of the TH400 with the 6" tailhousing of the 4L80E. That is pretty close to the 3" difference (it's actually 3.5" but close enough!) that everyone is quoting.

MaxPF, if you have actual measurements to show something different I'm all ears. :deal: I'd really like to get an accurate set of numbers on this...

I wish I did :( Anyone want to donate a 98-up 4L80E to me :D

What adaptor and t-case?

What's different about a '98-up? Sorry if that was already stated.

The case has revised oil passages that give better lube flow to the planetaries. They are easy to tell apart externally: if the cooler lines are both near the bellhousing, it is an older case. If it has one line near the bellhousing and the other line is farther back, it is the newer case.

I don't want to imply that the earlier cases are junk or that I wouldn't use one, but the later ones are preferred if you are sourcing one for a swap

Mine was pulled from a 97 C&C tow truck, and is the newer design. It think it s a 4L85E based on the fact that it had a drum brake attached to the back. It is going in my 68 camaro behind an ls1. Here is a pic to verify the above dimensions.

Maybe 97 was the year that the case changed. I can never remember. AFAIK there is no way to tell externally whether it is an 80 or an 85. Doesn't matter much - they're both way stronger than any 350/700/4L60E.

And that measurement from the bell to the end of the case is close enough to 26".

Not to h-jack,, but what is needed to run a 4L80E in an old truck like my truggy with no electronics at all.

Does someone make an aftermarket kit for the electronics ?

or can it be converted to full manual operation ( which would be my preference ) for off road use....
