4l80E Problems! - (Scott - Trans shop Reccomendations?)

You read the codes from the odb connector under the dash, but the normal reader didn't pull tranny codes. The owner at my local trans shop had a box about the size of a loaf of bread that he connected to the odb port and my cig lighter.

He got three codes out. I post in this forum asking for help and there wasn't much of it when it came to 4l80es.

My tranny ran fine for a long time and hard shifts from 1st to 2nd. It had 373s in it so I'm not sure how long it was without OD. It could have been since I bought it. Anyway, it start slipping and taking off in 2nd and then would shift down to 1st build preasure then shift to 2nd. I change the fluid and it made some difference but slowly came back.

I took it to the trans shop and he pulled the codes and then replace the 1/2 solenoid and preasure switch. Everything sweet after that.

Cool, thanks tim.

Looking good! I forgot you have a white 91. I am jealous of your motor.

Was really excited to get my 33x12.50 BFG At's mounted up, with Zero Rates, and 16.5" M/t classic wheels until i ran into this tranny snag....

I talked to my trans guy and he said it could be a pressure solenoid inside the pan that's bad. I'll send you another PM with some more contact info for him.

Got a call from Dr. Mark today. He replaced a couple soilinoids and installed a boost pump, and problems did not go away. After extensive test driving, he thinks there may be some internal manifold crack/leak, or something else.

He is removing and tearing into it today. He knows i need it back by Thursday night, so hopefully i'll have and update on the patient tmr. May or may not turn into a full rebuild, will depend on the condition of parts when he gets in there. I trust him to tell me if it looks to have been rebuild recently or not. If not, i'll get it rebuild, might as well do it right! He also installed the sending unit for my B&M temp gauge. Not going to be cheap, but at least it will be done right.

While he's got the trans out, he is going to reseal the 2 halves of my xfer case, guess thats one more leak eliminated.

Thanks for the reccomendation scott.

I'll keep everyone updated.

Bummer dude , well at least you'll know what you have when its done!!!

All my parts came in the other day so I may attempt my own rebuild if I do there will be a full write-up!

sounds to me like your pump is gone. Pressure switch is kicking out and not letting it into overdrive because of low pressure. Also reason for the sloppy shifts. Could also be a crack or internal leak as your tranny guy said. Ether way i would do a total rebuild.

Sounds like a full rebuild is what is going to happen. Unless he gets in there, and all the "rebuild" parts look less than 25k old.

Got it back. He pulled through and met the deadline i had, which was awesome. Great trans guy. Ended up doing a full rebuild/upgrades. For what i do, he felt the stock cooler on that trans was sufficient, so as soon as i get my gauge hooked up, ill watch the temps, and see if i want to add a bigger cooler later.

Full trans rebuild with upgrades, resealed transfer case halves, replaced input/output transfer case seals. I had a leaking transfer case before, but the fluid level never dropped. Never thought much of it, but i guess the trans was refilling the transfer case through the messed up input seal. doh.

Initial impressions, he set it up to shift HARD. I like it, but i think it will take some getting used to. Under slow accel, it shifts smooth, and gets progressively firmer the more i get into the throttle. Picking up the boat in a couple hrs, so ill let you guys know how it does.

If you need a trans guy in the SF Bay Area, PM 4x4high or myself. He's a good friend of scott's, and knows his stuff. I would definitely recommend him to others.

Glad he took care of you and that you're happy. He is a really cool guy and knows his stuff.

Put the boat behind it, and it feels good! Can hold overdrive on teh freeway with a load again, and has a good positive shift feel.

Headed up to tahoe in a couple hrs :)

ok, so it needs to be toned down a little. It shifts firm most of the time, but something is surging pretty bad some of the time. Mainly uphill. It feels like bad axle wrap from the shock load of the shift. Not exactly sure what it is, but not a huge deal, my parents have to bring the boat back when i'm not here. So i'll get it adjusted before i tow again. Besides that, worked good!

Here are some pics. But pic with teh truck is before the 17" GM wheels, and before the boat tower/bimini/speakers.

Other pic is right after the tower.

Damn, i need newer pics of my boat!

EDIT: I found some!

Apparently the end of 08 was a bad time to sell a new boat :doah:
