in 28,000 miles ive managed to kill two of these things now:(

so option time.

get a book, some upgraded parts and rebuild it myself or with the help or overview of a friend, this is cheaper but will it work

here is the tci rebuild kit from summit, uses the same parts they do in their street fighter tranns

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=TCI-278800&N=700+115&autoview=sku

or a basic rebuild kit and upgrade the bands and clutches?

Go get a low mile trans from a wrecking yard, 750-900.00

TCI, Hughes ect, whole trans.. 2000-4k

orrrrrr

a nv4500 conversion, this option is expensive, i would have to track down or make a pedal assembly, and then deal with the computer on some level

thoughts? I willing to go any direction even a manual as I get some gearing but it would be a serious hassel

I think the first order of business would be finding out why your killing them... you run your truck hard.. but damn, 2 in 28k :eek1:

Rebuilding it your self is not that bad, if you take your time and get a good book and DVD its pretty easy.

I'd agree. Those things are pretty tough.

BTW - Bowtie Overdrives builds level II 4L80E trannies for $2200, and level III's for $2500. I highly recommend them, and they know their stuff big-time.

Doesn't look to me like the TCI kit does anything to address any potential hard parts issues. Not that I'm a 4L80E expert, but typically there are some "must do's" when rebuilding a tranny, as time exposes weaknesses that can be easily addressed in a rebuild, and should be for better life and performance.

I'd go that route, no reason a 4L80E shouldn't last hundreds of thousands of miles when rebuilt properly.

with all you tire size changes have you kept up with reprogramming the PCM to change the shift points and give the PCM the correct correction factor for the gears and tire size change?

well sunday it would not go in reverse, then it went forward in reverse and nuetral:crazy:

after umping the truck and letting it ool down it worked like normal again:confused:

then, tuesday night it starts slipping between 1st and second and does a very bumpy sloppy shift when it did finally grab it

I do drive the hell out of this thing, constant abuse on the redline and the tires are spinning anytime I can get away with it.. but still, 2 trannys? These are supposed to be a pretty strong tranns. The 3/4 burb i used to have had a hard life behind a 454, and it lasted to 140k and only the torque converter went out.

I dunno, just sucks, so im trying to make the best choice so I dont have to do another tranny in 5,000 miles.

Get some good manuals and a DVD and rebuild it yourself, then when you break it again, it will be easy to fix :D After talking to some trans guys about the trans I had rebuilt, I would avoid TCI parts. I've rebuilt a trans before and with a good manual its not that difficult. Good luck

As previously mentioned, you need to determine why the transmission if failing to begin with. With the amount of modifications you have performed on the truck my first suspicion would have to be it has not been reprogrammed correctly and/or is not getting all of the sensor inputs required to make it live. The 4L80E relies heavily on electronic inputs to work properly and survive. Do you have any warning lights on the dash on?

Also, when you replaced the trans the first time what all did you do? Just slap in a new trans? Did you replace the torque converter and completely flush out the cooling system? Confirm the cooling system is not blocked or restricted?

How does the fluid look?
Or are your going through hard parts?
Most auto trannys die from heat. Make sure you have an adequate auxilary cooler if you are driving it hard. A tans temp guage and remote filter cant hurt either.
Make sure all the sensors are operating corretly with the computer.

when the last tranns died, I simply replaced it with a gm tranny and converter, put air through the lines then left the return off and cycled through a couple quarts before I hooked it up.

I do have a engine light on right now. I have a feeling it might be heat related as half my fan shroud is missing:doah: Also at one point this weekend before the problems I saw my temp at 140 plus so I shut it off and the rest of the day it never went hot again.

what is the calibration status on you speedo? Cause if you are running whatever tall tires, and your truck thinks its going 90 with 31's........geez.

Haha

pardon my french:

your tranny breaks cause you beat the **** out of it, and your truck.

build it a lot stronger, or go NV4500.

with 5.38s and 41 inch iroks im right back near factory gearing, the first trans I killed was with 4.10s and and 38's so that one made more sense.

i vote junk yard trans, and give me your core for helping swap it in.
and get off the comp and go to the meet n greet!!

Near is not good with the newer transmissions, i would look into gettting a tuner like HP tuners that you can change this with, plus then you could tune your motor to get more power and turn off the lights that are useless now

factory with a 30.4 tall tire/245/75/16 @ 65mph= 2203.1099999999997 rpm

modified now with a 40" tall tire @ 65.00 mph = 2209.1447368421054 rpm

I think that near enough will work in this case!:wink1:

the brake and abs lights dont bother me, I will remove the fuse and kill the circuit to the light
