Ok -- I just had my 700R4 rebuilt for the second time. The guy did a really good job and I'm happy with it, but it'll probably only last a year or two. I have the 6.2 with a Banks power package, 40's, 14 bolt rear with a detroit and the 10 bolt front with a Tru-Trac. I was given an old 91 3/4 ton Sub. that turned out to have the 4L80E. Is this tranny truly that much better than the 700R4? If so, why and how? Should I rebuild it to have on hand when my 700R4 throws in the towel again?

I have an 85 Sub 4x4, so I'd have to rig up a computer somehow....

4880-e is based off and uses some parts from a th400 tranny. much bigger and hd. same gear ratios as 400 but overdrive and lockup conv.

you need to search on here. the swap is not to bad. but can be done. lots of good info here. min parts needed. stand alone computer from a gm 6.5td setup. as it only runs tranny with inputs.

new drive shafts for length problems. and new input gear for your tcase as its 32 spline not your 700 27 spline. and some other basics.

in general, it takes a pretty well built 700 to even come close, strengthwise, to a stock 80e...and even then, its still going to have quiet a few weak links.

I went to an 80e in my blazer and couldn't be happier. first gear is kinda sluggish, but it doesn't drop almost 50% when hitting 2nd gear, which, imo, makes up for it. It will suck up a few extra hp/tq over a 700, having larger internals, but its not noticeable...what it noticed is the higher first gear, which is still not that bad. Overall, i say, without a doubt, go for it.
