Since everyone else is doing this I might as well follow along. Todays pictures are of the block after scrubbing and painting it fresh from the machine shop. I set the heads on loose and the intake to see what it looks like clean and almost for real. I won't be using the intake in the picture on this engine because I have an edelbrock thats better suited for this build.

The basic specs are 8.5-1 compression with 120cc heads. The heads have been shaved .015 and larger valves put in, 2.11 intake and 1.77 exhaust. The crank is standard and the cam is a reground stock cam with my own idea for specs. Basicly its .485 lift intake and 218 dur @ .050 and the exhaust is .500 lift and 226 dur @.050. I'm doing a re-ring and re-using the stock pistons and rods.

My goalk for this engine is about 375hp and 550 tq on pump regular. I've deburred the heads and zero decked the block. I should be running about .040 quench and that should help fight detonation. I'm going to advance the cam timing as much as I can for power.

My biggest goal was to get this running for under $1500. Right now I'm at $1200 so there is some room but that can get squeezed quick. The parts and work have taken me 2 years to gather up and I've hunted for every deal I could find just to be a cheapa$$.

Nice build, Is that a Bulldog intake? I was scared to go that route, but now I wish I did, the Eldobrock makes for hot & cold cylinders.

Johnnychimpo, You building a Caddy too?

Yeah its the bulldog. I actually have 2 of them. One is the old style filled with epoxy and this is the new revised one. Smaller internal runner diameter and it will bolt up to iron heads. The new manifold was tested on the strip last week and it kicks butt.

The biggest hangup on the edelbrock is getting the fuel right. That can be hard with a Qjet, especially if it came off a 350 not a 500. Most of these cars have had a carb replacement done by someone who called the local autoparts store and got a reman generic carb that fit. The idle passages are too small so you can't get them rich enough to keep them from running lean and cooking a cylinder.

If you are interested in the intake please PM me and I'll get you contact info for one. I don't sell these. So I'm not a vendor.

I not swapping to one(BULLDOG), I am going to stay w/ the Eldobrock for a while. I am not having idle problems, or any real problems for that matter. I am running a Stage 2 Jet Performance Q-jet. I just have a couple cylinders that are a little harder on the plugs than the rest. Not enough to warrent a swap.

Thats what I was afraid you were going to say. Did you start w/ a front sump pan for the mounting surface?

Do you want to race this engine or the stroker thats in the wings waiting on heads? It looks like this....
10.5-1 compression with a 4.4 inch stoke and bore
full roller cam, thats cam bearings and lifters and shaft rockers. The shaft hasn't been ground because I don't have the heads for the flow data but the cam will have around .650 lift and 240~255 dur @.050
The heads are the Bulldog/MTS aluminum with 2.19 intakes and 1.84 exhaust valves.

Then the racing could be really fun:D. But its all good and your new engines are sexy:bow:

I don't care which one you want to use.....I'm just excited to finally have something with a goodly amount of power that I actually CAN race with.... :saweet:

Today was a great day. The shortblock is done. The crank, rods, pistons, cam, and oil pan are on the block for real. Started checking pushrod clearance tonight. Going to have to grind a little next to the intake port for the 3/8 pushrods. If I put my shaft setup on I can use the stock pushrods and no grinding is required....choices.
