i just did a 52" front spring swap on my '79 silverado 10 and have a
question about how the write-up said to do it. in the write-up it says that
the front uper shackle hanger has to be moved to corect shackle angle. i
have not moved the shackle mount and my shackle angle looks to be about the same as in the pictures posted in the write-up. i am running shackles similar to ORD's and made a custom front hanger / body mount. i cant really understand why the shackle hanger needs to be moved. can someone clarify please?

You need to post pics/ more info...

Based on what you offeredup it could be a few things.

1. Your mount is not far enough forward (the front one you made)
2. You unknowingly used 56" springs
3. Shackle is shorter (creates more angle)

what he said... pics... goooood.

ok double checked, they are 52" springs. and measured the shackle, they are 7" eye to eye. also checked that the front hanger was moved forward enough and it was. 2-2.5 inches.

If you're measuring spring eye to eye at rest than these could be 56" springs. The length is measured along the spring surface?

Yeah those have to be 56s.. if you measure them perfectly flat, you get 56s. If you measure when they're still arched, your measurement will come out to 52".... I don't see how the 52s will fit without relocating anything...

i measured eye to eye and as the truck sits now the springs are almost totaly flat. i know they are 52" becasue they used to be under the back of my truck, and i know that i ordered 52" springs when i got them for the back. unless they shipped me 56", i am 99.999999% sure they are 52"s though. the custom front hangers moved the front spring bolt forward about 2 inches.

the reason your shackle angle is so good is because the way the article shows you to move teh front hanger should move the front point forward ~4"... so only moving the mount forward 2.5" will keep the axle in the stock location,etc...

That does make more sense. I forgot where the stock location is in relation to the one in the pic.

gold star for cajun4X4  . that does make sence, did not even think of that, the way in the writeup moves it farther forward. i was wanting to keep the axle in the stock location so i only moved it the difference of the springs, ~2 inches. and now i feel like an idiot :doah:

that was the 1st thing I noticed when I looked at the pics you posted... the springs front eye is a loong way from the end of the frame. On my set up (as seen in the write up!) the spring hanger is about as far forward as a stock un-modified frame will allow...
