57 Pontiac "Zero Fox"

Man, it’s like I knew you were holding out on us

It’s been so long I don’t remember...engine plans?

Stock, stock, stock. The Canadian Pontiac is basically a Chevy, and was built on the same assembly line here in Canada. Consequently it has a 261 straight 6 good for about 150 hp. I got it unstuck, cleaned things up and added new gaskets. I did have it running, but not really well so far. I think I need a bit more timing, and possibly bring the float level up a little. First step is get the cooling system installed and filled so I can run it longer without worry, then get it running better.

I think with a bit more run time things will unstick and get better. So, the 'plan' is to run the stock 261 and three speed...eventually swapping in the three speed with OD. I'll probably get a set of the correct size blackwall bias ply tires on the stock rims with the poverty caps just because...and a set of 15" radials for everyday stuff. I do intend to drive this to and from work as often as I can.

Ironically I have very recently acquired a tuned LQ-9 with 4L65E and an AWD case, currently sitting beside the car...but I have no plans to introduce the two to each other. I have an 83 K1500 I got last year that turned out to have a 283. I think I might just install the 6.0 etc in that. Add the Hi pinion D60 and a 14 bolt to it and see where that goes. I think the Blazer is getting sold, but before anyone freaks out too much Russel is the interested party for that. I'm currently trying to come up with fair value on it, without being a dick because i'd like to see Russel own it.

Sometimes things just need to change. Either way, we’re sure you’ve given it thought to what you want to end up with

Sometimes I get plenty of time to think on my new route. This is the short version of what I've come up with. I have these vehicles currently.

83 C1500, 6.2, 700R-4, zero rust and stored at a buddy's farm. Ideally I get it out of there before the mice get to it.
83 K1500, 283, 700R-4, NP 208, it isn't pretty, but it isn't horribly rotten either.
90 Blazer, mostly done 5.3 etc.
57 Pontiac, project but not far from road worthy really. Super solid and original.
17 Sierra CCSB 4x4.

OK, the '17 is DD. No brainer and I don't foresee getting out from under it anytime soon.

The 83 C1500 has been languishing for far too long. It should still run. My eldest daughter has a lot of sentiment for this truck. She came with me when I bought it and road tripped it home from Can Can's place in 07. I taught her to drive in this truck. We talked about it and I'm giving this truck to her. The hesitation for me was always the 6.2 being a fun killer for her. It had it's cranky times, it wasn't exactly fast and I felt she would have too many frustrations with it. Russel knows of an LQ-4 I can pick up for pretty cheap. I have no current spot at home for this truck. My daughter has no extra room where she currently lives. So for now it stays at the farm.:doah:

The 83 K1500 I bought for next to nothing a year ago I think? I like the look and practicality of a long box. This is most likely getting the 6.0 LQ-9 etc with the HP Ford D60 and a 14 bolt. I think 4" of lift and 37's. The goal is a driver, home depot pick-up I can wheel.

57 Pontiac I've discussed. The goal is roadworthy, plated and insured this summer. Stock

That leaves the Blazer. I had Blazers for the last almost 30 years. Always because I wanted to wheel, and have room for the wife and kids. Camping etc. The K5 filled that need in a few different flavors over the years. My kids are now grown (24 and 18). A K5 offers no advantages for me any longer and is much less practical than a pick-up. This particular Blazer has been "in progress" for almost 6 years. Some of that was financial, some was a lack of interest I was fighting. I have driven it with the new drivetrain. Pretty fun, and gobs more power than the TBI 350 it had. It needs a new home, hopefully with Russel, and if not then someone else but my first preference is for Russel.

I'm heading out to my garage right now. I'll snap a few pic's of stuff and post em up later.

Ok on to a few pics. Some super exciting green lock knobs. Correct would be black...which may happen. I know, riveting stuff!

Next up is the Muncie 319 withe the Borg Warner R-11 overdrive. I just uncrated it. Everything rotates nicely, no excessive play from what I can feel and it doesn't look like its been out in the weather.

More in the next reply.

So the overdrive is a bit of a Rube Goldberg thing. Lot's of mechanical features to make it all work as designed. There is an "overdrive" knob with cable that actuates or enables overdrive. There is a big solenoid that actually engages overdrive. Power to that runs through the governor on the other side by the speedo output. There is a kick-down switch on the gas pedal linkage, and I think that's it? To use you pull the overdrive knob out. Start out in first gear and accelerate, shift to second, at anything above 28 mph the governor will allow overdrive to engage, so you would momentarily lift the throttle and it would shift into 2nd over. continue accelerating and manually shift into 3rd over. If you need to pass someone, or start up a grade you just step on the gas and the switch on the linkage cuts power to to overdrive, and also to the col (for a split second) and it automatically drops down to 3rd straight. After the pass, or hill let up on the gas and it automatically drops back into OD.

Allegedly you can drive this from 5 or 6 mph to 45 mph without ever using the clutch. it would just shuttle between 2nd and 2nd over as needed around town. This was the "sell"...for the ladies. haha. I want it for freeway driving.

Most all the parts are available for the OD unit. I will eventually clean it up and see what works and what doesn't.

I completely understand what he is saying about his reasons though.

I’m much happier with my long bed than the Blazer

I knew I'd get some negative feedback on that, understandably. I took too long to put it together, and my kids grew up. It's not getting parted or anything...

Sounds like you have a plan... not that my opinion matters but if it was me I would still take the k10 and the 6.2 body to make one nice truck with all the part you now have.

Blazer going to Russ i’ve seen for a while.... The pontiac is a good idea to keep stock, The 283 would not hurt the stock thing to bad though seeing how that was a option for it.

Just happy to see projects moving along, whatever you do is all good!

Well, Jess has her heart set on the 83 GMC C1500. It means something to her, and that means something to me. Knowing that I couldn't bring myself to harvest the body off of it for a wheeler/driver etc.

If the 261 ever comes up lame, the 283 is an option...and in stockish trim would still be fine using the three on the tree. I think though that the 261 is still good. The 283 can slide under a bench for a while. Spare parts have a way of becoming useful.

The Blazer going to Russ, is still ultimately up to Russ. I don't think either of us is in a big rush. I have no need to sell it now or anytime soon. It owes me nothing, and I owe nothing on it. If and when it happens the funds would go to putting the ugly '83 together. Calling it "Dirty Pretty" lol

Oh it makes perfect sense. But still sad.

It'd stay in the CK5 family, and I'll go out on a limb and say it'd be going to a better home. I haven't proved to be particularly motivated with this rig, and aside from the build thread I don't have a lot tied up in it emotionally. I've never wheeled it, and the only road trip ever in it was when we moved here. Still it's a good truck and in pretty solid shape.

I'm not going anywhere, and will still be rocking a square...just one more suited to my current needs/wants. Nothing really to be sad for IMO.

I do appreciate the sentiment though. :waytogo:

Rene' any thoughts of doing some overlanding type wheeling? The Blazer would still be a great rig for that!
I love the 6.2 truck too. It was fun riding around in it (although if I recall a bit illegal) as I hadn't ridden in a 6.2 truck in years. After I left you guys in Alberta, I rode in Erics 6.2 Blazer!
my .02: I think if you can get that 6cyl running good in the Pontiac that should stay and go with that OD unit. If the 6 turns out to be a helpless case throw that 283 in it. probably wouldn't be much difference in performance, but might be cheaper and easier than a rebuild of the 6cyl. Does the bellhousing bolt pattern match up?
