Ok so since I may have hurt my motor on my last wheeling trip I have been looking into options and I came across a 6.0 from a 2001 3500 2wd truck. He has the complete truck so I could get the harness, 4l80e (to sell) and the rest of the truck to part out minus the front clip. The only thing missing from the motor is the flywheel. I know I have seen lots of info but my searchs for "6.0 swap" or "6.0" come back with 0 results.

My questions are:

Would it be a good choice for a swap?

How much do these motors go for complete with low miles?

My thinking is if I can get the truck cheap and get it installed without too much cost I may be able to get it done for close to the cost of building and installing a 406 and I think I may be happier with the 6.0 but I don't know.

EDIT: If anybody can post some links to swaps so I can do some research tonight that would be great!

look up 5.3 swap, its been covered.

In short (what i would do roughly)

TBI blazer tank, iroc Z tpi efi pump (45psi)
Vette regulator (fuel in, fuel return, and only 1 line to the manifold)
You can get an adapter flywheel to make it work with your transmission.
Motor mount adapters can be had off ebay for around 40 bucks, easy to install. Bellhousing pattern is the same.
You may have to cut into your frame to clear the truck manifolds, some guys have used f body (98-02) stock manfiolds, 98 being the preferred.
I like the cable driven throttle bodys, but when we did my buddys 67 short step he choose to use the fly by wire setup and just bolted the 05 pedal to his firewall.
Kickdown will be an issue, I cant remember if yours was an automatic, but we couldn't find a workable kickdown for his th350 so we just used a 4l60e instead.
Sometimes the ac pump hits the corssmemeber, i beleive ORD or DIY4X was making a gen III/IV crossmember, but i dont think its hit the market yet. Or i can get you a company that makes alternator and ac pump relocation brackets, lots of guys use them in the second gen camaros.
Of course computer, there is a guy between Lawrence, and topeka that reprograms the computers.

Any other questions? very similar to the 5.3 swap. I wanted to 5.3/4l80e my k5 at one point, but college students bank accounts are only so deep.

Wow thanks Ryan! I have a th400 so no kickdown. AC would be coming off of the motor so no problems there. Do you know what these motors go for?

I had my hands at a 57k mile 5.3 with all accesories and comptuer for 600, but that was a deal i should have never passed on. I really dont know the market value of a 6.0, but im thinking with all accessories maybe 1000-1500ish? Not sure on that though, how many miles are we talking? ill talk to my salvage yard buddy.

Not sure, he said low miles but I haven't looked at it yet. (ill text ya and let you know when I find out) I'm thinking of offering him $1500 for the whole truck (it's wrecked) in hopes that I can get it for $2000. LKQ has several 6.0s for $950 (motor only) but they were all around 80K-100K miles. Even if I have to give $2500 for it I can sell the 4L80E and whatever 1 ton rear end is in it for some coin to get closer to what I want to pay.

a guy on my camaro board said he can do a brand new ly6 6.0 motor for 2500 "backdoor handshake deal", aka giving the camaro board a better discount, but doesnt have ECM, wiring or accesories. If yoy can get that whole truck for 2k i think your getting a deal if under 50k miles.

LS1TECH.com has a lot of info regarding this swap and the Gen III/IV engine family. I recommend getting on pirate4x4.com and sending a PM to a member who goes by Bo185 on there. He is a guru on the Gen III/IV engine family and swapping them into pretty much anything.

Cool guys thanks. What the heck is a LY6? What is the differance between LQ4 and LQ9 motors? I thought thats what I was dealing with, with a 6.0 motor.

the truck you have is probably an lq4, lq9s were in caddys i believe more often, higher compression different cam a little higher horsepower.

LQ9 has higher compression ratio and more HP than the LQ4. The LY6 is an updated version of the LQ4 and has variable valve timing.

Anybody know the HP and TQ numbers for a LQ4?

How do I tell the differance if I am just looking at the motor? I have found several on car-part.com

Yes thanks, looks like around 300 for both, a little more for TQ. I may just build my 406, sounds like more fun!

If you can go with the later gen IV ly6 THEN DO IT. They have beefed up rods and pistons over the regular lq4 or lq9 and have the new cathedral port L92 heads . Also since it has the 58x reluctor wheel on the crank, it will give you the option to go with the 6l90e.. instant nocturnal emissions.

?? huh?

with the ly6, swap in a cam and tune, and thats a 50hp jump atleast. I have seen people pull 80hp from a cam/tune. long tube headers with tune is pb another 25hp.

just saying, these motors are powerhouse motors.
