Just curious about what type of exhaust you diesel guys are running. I would like to upgrade the stock setup on mine. In the future I want to go turbo but want something for now to help the motor breathe. Does anyone make a manifold back kit? If not what size piping is recomended? Also what is a good muffler for a diesel?

Thanks

Good question, I got duals on my cucv. Always wondered if there were options as far as exhaust.

Not sure anyone makes complete kit, but many run 3" single (like I do) or 2,5" duals with flowthrough mufflers.

The restriction is at the manifold where the outlet is 2.25". IIRC Lee Swanger at the diesel page had modified a set or two so they were 2.5" at the outlet. Bigger is always better with a diesel, because they move a metric ass-load of air through them. I need exhaust for my '83 and will run 2.5" pipes from the manifolds back, into some 2.5-3" adaptors, 3" flowmasters and 3" tailpipes.

Glasspacks are about the only muffler I've heard recomended against because they eventually clog with soot. Flow's seem to work pretty good, mostly because there isn't any packing junk inside.

Of course any diesel specific perfomance muffler will also work. For whatever it's worth the 6.2 sounds very nice with free flowing duals...kinda big blockish sounding.

hmmm.... how loud is it with the mufflers off? maybe i'll give it a shot, but i don't want to be pulled over for noise pollution.

Straight pipes and no turbo is stupid loud...with a turbo and no muffler it sounds pretty good and not too obnoxious.

ok... guess i won't then. :(

or....

you could donate your turbo to my set up! :haha:

LOL...bet you'd make the drive again for that wouldn't you? :p:

I'm still thinking about which truck to use that on. I'm kinda leaning towards installing it on the '83 pick-up...mostly because it's going to be getting the ARP head studs this week anyways. We'll see, I still need to get the turbo itself rebuilt before I do anything with that set-up.

I'll definitely port match the intake on the '83 when I have it apart. I have a spare 'C' code intake I might take in and have my machinist buddy hog the EGR out for me...

i think you should put it on your c20. it's gonna be your tow rig anyway. i think you've told me before that you've never felt like you were missing power in your wheelin rig, but i bet you'll feel that way with a boat behind your c20!

i'd make that drive again to wheel with you sometime. :) it's not really that far anyway - 8 hours or so. no biggie.

i run a banks turbo w/ about 3 feet of straight pipe to a 6" straight thought muffler that is there to pass visual inspection and a dump behind that

its not bad really... i love the way it sounds

Warpspeed, Heartthrob, both make systems in aluminized and Stainless.

Oh, wait, non-turbo. I'm not sure but worth checking out.

Now what does the larger tailpipes do for ya? I have a couple 2.5" Flow 40 series just sitting I could use. I know internal they are same whether they be 2 1/4" inlet/outlet or 3". So I could run the 2.5" pipe into the Flow mufflers then cut down the outlet and run a 3" pipe then turndowns.

it increases the apparent size of the naturally small canadian cojones! :wink1: kidding. :haha:

well I thought the larger size pipe was to cool EGT's?
how would that affect it if it's only a larger tailpipe (after the muffler)?

i got a magnaflow 4" exhuast from work off an '97 7.3 stupid duty, i just need to a custom Y-pipe made and hopefully it will work, if not i got it for free so nothing lost :)

You see a lot of progressively larger systems on diesel trucks. Something to do with the gasses still expanding as they're leaving the engine. I have also heard big exhaust helps with EGT's.

Colby, when I get my truck back in wheelable shape you should come up and do some wheeling...that'd be cool.

I am going to install a turbo and am just looking fer a non egr intake and upper plenumn. I am deffinetly going to run it straight piped.

Anyone have an extra manifold?

i run 2" to a Y next to the tranny and 3" from there to just in front of the rear axle. i have some lame ass chrome muffler that dosnt make any difference what so ever just behind the Y. it sounds nice on the trail but i wear ear plugs when i drive on the street. its bloody loud. the lack of sheet metal and glass has a lot to do with it thou.
