Well just incase someone needs this thread for trouble shooting I finally went and got the truck and found the timing was retarded on the pump approx 1/16 of an inch or more. so far it starts great. I need to get better tires on it and start driving it to test it.

was that 1/16 according to the marks on the pump and timing cover. Usually when they are timed correctly you will be a 1/16 on the advanced side of the marks. So if it was a 1/16 on the slow side of the marks, that is quite a bit slow.

It was 1/8 on the slow side now that I looked at it again. So far it starts right up. Still planning on at least the 6.5 starter I already bought. He had plummed in a electric fuel pump and disconnected the manual lift pump. Do you think if I put the electric lift pump right after the tank valve I could reconnect the mech lift pump and run it with both? I like the idea the elec can help fill the system and the mechical should still help it move fuel. For as doggy as everyone says these are I am pretty suprised by the pep. It is no race car but you can lug it alot more and keep moving at a good pace.

@ things made the reputation bad for these engines:
First was teh olds 350 diesel, and second was the 2.72 gears most came with that made then doggish compared to a gas engine with 3.73.
If geared properly as you noticed they are pretty good and you can lug them down lower than the gas engines and be fine.

Crossing my fingers on how hard the hot start problem will be but so far I am happy as heck. I will post some pics tomorrow with the new tires. Getting 235 85 16s to get as much free gearing as I can. I think it will tow my 22' car trailer much better simply because it will handle it better. I don't need to go 100 mph and hopefully the mpg will be OK pulling.
