Well I've started tearing into the new blazer, interior is all stripped out, will be repairing the rust, bedlining, and adding a cage. But first I've got a mech. question. I was driving the truck home the other day after wheeling over some dirt piles behind work. The truck now makes a shrieking noise like a belt slipping, and the volts on the alternator droped 2-3, and a burnt rubber smell, but only under load.. Limped it home, and it stopped squealing 2 miles from the house. Did an oil change, replaced the thermostat etc., cranked up the truck, and the squeal was back. It looked like the alternator belt was loose, so I tightened it up, and the squeal got worse. Throw me some ideas to look at before I trailer it down to the diesel shop....Dave

The alt belt is glazed...get a good quality replacement and snug it up properly. Each ignition event produces a rotational velocity spike much stronger than a gas engine, so keeping belts tight can be a problem if they're not in good shape.

No need for a diesel shop or a tow...

when you have the belt off, spin the pully and see how it spins, bearsings do go. check the pully, glazed pully's will make good belts slip to

Sounds good guy's. Will pick up some belts tommorow and give it a try. Let you know how i goes...Dave

So did you find out?

Sounds like glazed belts to me. My Tracker has issues with them glazing and then they squeal like holy hell in the cold weather months. I can't get a set to last past a year. Bought some AC Delco belts so I'm hoping they last at least past me selling the thing soon.

Haven't had time to tear into it yet. Probably the end of the week. Goin to louisiana tommorow to interview for an oil rig medic position, be gone for a few days....Dave

if you go through multiple belts and they won't last, check the pully. its usually glazed from all the slipping and new belts will slip soon. you can try roughing it up a bit but usually end up changing the pulley

Yeah my old 6.2 TD ate belts on a 3-4 month basis, now that I think about it I bet I had glazed pulleys

Got the belt changed, stopped the sqeal and the burning smell. Also did some floor replacement, trucks coming along....Dave

Well the new belt started doing the same thing today. The alternator spins pretty freely w/o the belt on it. So maybe the pullys glazed as stated above. Tryed to get a new pully at the parts store, was told I had to buy a new alternator w/ the pully installed, the pully s not avalible as a stand alone part. Any ideas of where to get one (other than a junk yard, supper busy right now getting ready for the new job) or just shell out the 50 bucks for a new alternator.....Dave

Could use some 100 grit on the belt surface of the existing pulley...

Rene

I did when i changed the belt, and even when it wasn't slipping, the volts only got to about 10.

Sounds like time for a new alt anyways then...both my 6.2 trucks read 14-14.5 when running anything over idle. Even at idle they're both at 13-13.5.

I see a 78 amp and 100 amp alternator listed. Are the interchangable? I'm not planning on running a whole lot of acessories, just ac and a winch. Let me now which ways the way to go...Dave

I'd go with the bigger one. The winch will put a lot of load on the system.

Got the new alternator in, had problems with a new belt squealing and not charging. Put the old belt on, and the squeal went away, charging fine. So we're back up and running.

cool deal! I use the belts that look like they're cogged, they grip better than plain 'V' belts.

See, you didn't need a mechanic at all... :waytogo:

Rene

I haven't worked with v belts in forever and a day, been a serpentine snob for a while lol. Both the old and new belts were the same brand size etc, cog belts, but the new one howled like a banshee. Cranked up the blazer when I got home this morning, charging at 14-16v. Now to go get the new tailgate parts for the manual crank conversion, and a new driver door, and all new weather stripping.......
