My rig is an 82 6.2 2500 fairly clean truck, bout 165k. Got a turbo 400 and Im looking at swapping in a built 700r4 to get overdrive and in addition also looking at upgrading to a turbo. If I do this I would most likely pull the motor and rebuild and do the turbo then. What I'm wondering though is if it would be smarter to find a used 6.5 and rebuild that and just stick that in. Will the 6.5 bolt up to the 700r4 or t400?

Cost wise I would think the 6.5 swap would be cheaper seeing that the banks kit for the 6.2 is like 3000.00.

Or do I maybe scratch the 700r4 and go for the 4l80e. Maybe find a 90's donor truck with this setup and just swap it over.

Lot's of options but not sure which one is best, easiest, cheapest.

Thanks

My future plans include a 6.5 block with the basic banks kits and an A team turbo.

Thats probably not the cheapest though cause you don't have the turbo kit.

They fixed some of the 6.2s problems with the 6.5 so I think i would look for a 6.5 and a used banks turbo kit and then like I said use the A team turbo

Besides IP's and injectors, 6.2's and 6.5's are virtually identical. If your 6.2 runs good, you should try to find the turbo and manifolds off of a 6.5, and run it. Or look around for one of the Banks manifolds. I've seen them on ebay for $100. Personally I wouldn't spend the money on rebuilding either one. It'll cost you a ton, and you can find good running motors cheap.

What's the benefit of the A team turbo vs the banks or the stock 6.5 turbo. I'd want to get the most power I can get.

Is rebuilding a diesel a lot more than a gasser? I would think I could have it rebuilt for around 1500.00???

What about overdrive. If I were to keep the 6.2 is a 700r4 the best option for swap?

I've read that the 6.5 turbo is a pain to install on the 6.2 due to space issues is this the case.

Diesel parts are like boat parts. Just because they're for a diesel, for some reason they're three times the price.

The 700r4 is probably the easiest swap.

If you're running AC, you probably will have to go with the Banks manifold. It puts the turbo farther forward.

Go hang out at www.dieselplace.com. Learn more about them before you do anything.

My reasoning for the 6.5 is the 599 block seems more common in those. Although that might just be around here.

The 6.5 already has lower compression ratios than the 6.2 which allows for more boost.

The A team turbo is a hybrid turbo that is designed as a bolt on replacement for a 6.5 turbo. I do believe it takes some adaption to make it work with the banks stuff.

The A team turbo makes more boost and quicker.

I remember reading about this turbo when I first got into diesels, but now I don't remember where. Got a link?

http://www.ateamturbo.com/

Its built by a company called Walking J designs in Boise ( Idaho that is)

I haven't really asked them if I could use it with the banks stuff but I am pretty sure I could adapt it. I am sure there would need to be some adapting done.

Of course the easiest way to do it is to just leave it where it supposed to be and get the vintage air kit that does away with the AC box

I have read enough that I think if I could fine a lower milage 6.5 put the A team turbo on it with a good exhaust it seems like it would pull right with a VE pump cummins. I doubt it would hang with a p pump cummins that had been turned up and in all reality you don't get the robustness of a cummins.

All my decisions will be based on what I can find for the best price. If I can score a cummins for a decent price you bet that will go right in. But if I can pickup a 6.5 ( really considered worthless by many) I will use that

I've read somewhere that the 6.2 diesels head gasket should be replaced with a HD head gasket before slapping on a turbo. It will lower your compression and have a less chance of blowing the gasket. Just a FYI.

Just remember, the 6.2, 6.5's weren't designed for power. They were designed for economy. If you're looking for a powerhouse, or something to build up, I would save your money for a Cummins. You can build the piss out of them and they'll just smile.:woot:

Well a cummins would be sweet but they are a ton more work correct. And to be honest the reason I have the 6.2 truck is entirely for economy, I can run bio in the summer and get 20 + mpg's.... Having just a few extra ponies under the hood would really help though and getting overdrive would be a bonus.

If I were to find a 6.5 can I just bolt that straight in and mate it to a 700r4?

I do not have AC in this truck. I live in Jackson WY, no need for it whatsoever.

The other question is how does the Banks kit compare to the turbo on the 6.5?

I'm headed over to diesel place to check things out.

If I were to find a 6.5 can I just bolt that straight in and mate it to a 700r4? Yeah......more or less. Get a 93 with the mechanical IP.

The other question is how does the Banks kit compare to the turbo on the 6.5? The 6.5 turbo is a generic "safe" turbo. Just about anything is an improvement. I've heard people also have had good success with the turbo from a first gen cummins. I think thats the route I'm gonna go. I found a good one for $100. Then I can put the T3 from my 6.5 on my straight six in my Nova.

For cummins swap go to 4btswaps.com

Everyone says that about manifolds on eBay......I looked for a year and never saw a single banks 6.2 manifold, only kits that were parts and around 600 bones.

OP, I went with a factory 6.5 setup....still working on it as its not my DD.

Well by the sound of it what attracts me the most is the idea of finding a complete 6.5 (I guess a 93 with mechanical IP so it's bolt in) possibly throw some money at a rebuild and slap on this A team turbo. Build a nice custom exhaust and find a 700r4 and slap em together and either keep the 6.2 for parts or try to sell.

How much do you think I could find a nice complete 6.5 for?

I suppose I could stick with the 6.2 but I'm still up against having to drop a load on the banks kit or find a 6.5 used kit but more than likely I'll need to buy the whole engine anyway. I would just hate to throw down 3000.00 on a turbo and stick it on an old tired diesel and then have to pull and rebuild shortly down the road anyway. If I can save cash on the turbo system it's self maybe put my money into a nice rebuild be it a 6.5 or my 6.2, course I haven't looked into what exactly a rebuild would cost. Hmmmm.

Not against the cummins but I need to do more research to see what my expense would be all in all. I'd be gaining tremendously in power and reliability but sacrificing a bit in economy. I just love the idea of getting 20+ out of a 3/4 ton.

decisions, decisions...

Trevor I think finding a good 6.5 would be perfect for you.

Without AC I am pretty sure the fit just fine, but not totally sure.

Although you do know the fan from an AC truck works way better than the non ac fan right and I KNOW you need heat in Jackson cause its been cold here!

Just do some double checking with the firewall clearance.

Ask Russel on here he knows quite a bit about the 6.5 swaps I think he swapped on into an older pickup.

Next time you are over by Idaho Falls gimme a holler

Before I spent 3k+ on rebuilding a 6.5 I would consider the newer p400 optimizer or what ever it's called. I actually did some reading on this the other day and you can get one for around 5-6k With good power and reliable. I'm actually thinking about getting a 92/93 diesel Suburban and putting one in if or when the engine goes out.:dunno:

Did some looking at this p400 and it looks pretty stout. Now is 5 to 6 grand just for the long block? Where can you order them from?
