Engine was running well. Started blowing black smoke. Progressed to black with lot of grey, some puffs of white. Way down on power. Boost gauge was reading vacuum rather than boost. Swapped out turbo with another. Not much change. Still smoking, low on power, boost gauge reading vacuum. Any ideas?

Are all of the lines in the vacuum and boost system in the right place and connected?
Air cleaner need cleaned?

Air cleaner is a cone fabric kn knockoff. Seems clean. No vac lines to turbo. Waste gate tied like the original to truck one.

Is the charge pipe intact at every location? Sounds like the output from the turbo isn't making it into the engine...

Even without a turbo these can barely smoke like that.

Pull the upper intake manifold off to check for any obstruction, check between the filter/turbo as well.

If they're not obstructed, likely an injector (or multiple) are stuck open.

Any update on this?

Still reading vacuum, even when it was running correctly?

Is it possible the oil to the turbo is plugged and the turbo is locking up? Could explain why a different turbo did the same thing maybe... :dunno:

Update, got it running. Changed 4 injectors. Started and ran well. Boost goes to 5psi under load. Very light smoke under load. Seems cured. Best starting diesel I ever saw.
I just saw this but, yes I had mine doing the same thing and I found 3 injectors leaking at the o ring.
Changed o ring and tightened and I get 8lbs at full throttle with ATS turbo

I assume you have turned up your pump?

I haven't turned mine up (yet?), but holding mine at WOT up to 4000RPM never gets above ~5PSI of boost. I believe we have the same ATS kit with the Garrett TE04 turbocharger...

Never touched anything. Slapped the turbo on an engine I got from Colby Stephen with reworked heads, and I put a new head gasket when I removed the heads to get the bad glow plugs out :doah:
I thought that was low.
I guess I am good then
