6.2L/6.5L diesel + the new diesel fuel = ???

Azone usually carries Lucas & Power Service. Truck stops seem to carry alot of Howes & Power Service. Power Service is used widely with good results but some IP rebuilders say it has some harsh chemicals in it that can do a number on seals in the IP's.

I have used Power Service in the past with ok results. I didn't gell up in -25* temps with good doses of PS when I was in North Dakota last winter. For pure cold PS is a good additive. For lubrication I would try some non-detergent 30W motor oil. I generally get my ND30w at Napa. Napa brand oil is Valvoline and it is only $1.80 quart.

For the short term PS and ND30w should be the easiest combo to find. For the long term I would look for a different additive like Stanadyne, Howes, Amsoil, ..... & ND30w.

lots of gret discussion about diesel, alot above my head. Anyone running grease, VO, SVO, WVO in their diesel?

I have been studying it and am going to buy a diesel truck and convert it to run waste vegetable oil.

PM me if you have any experience...

There's one station here that is a truck stop oriented station, so they already have a separate tanker load of Winterized Diesel along side the standard #2 Diesel. I also saw a sign at that station for Diesel Gold, but there was no mention of it on the pumps themselves, which led me to believe that it would be coming there in the near future. Their advertisment basically said it doesn't ever gel, it doesn't ever need additives, it provides better mileage, and it conforms to the new 2007 regulations, so maybe it's a biodiesel mix or something along those lines, which I understand a 4% mix of biodiesel in ULSD replaces all of the lost lubricity. Really, I don't understand why they would't say it's a Bio Blend if it is, but we'll see soon enough.

I looked at my local NAPA and Wally World and both had a two varieties of Power Service. Both also carried a 30W ND oil. Gotta look around a bit more for some different fuel additives for the long run. At least I know I should be able to get it home okay.:D

So I am buying a CUCV in Wisconsin next Friday and driving it across Michigan's Upper Peninsula and then down state to where I live. To put it mildly the UP isn't all that urbanized. I plan on filling it up with diesel every time I see a pump because gas stations are few and far between on some stretches of the trip...if they have diesel is a toss up...

What common additives or non-detergent oil should I look for?

Any particular brands? I'm talking stuff you could easily find in your average back woods NAPA, AutoValue, CarQuest, Advanced Auto, AutoZone, etc. Doubt I'll run across many diesel specialty shops on the trip.

Funny you mention that. I spent three weeks driving around the UP last month. Finding diesel is not easy. We knew - from past experience - that there was a diesel station in Paradise. So we drove there and arrived with just barely 10 gallons of fuel left. And . . . found out the station had gone out of business. So, we had to cancel our plans in that area - since we barely had enough fuel to leave and search elsewhere. When we finally DID find a diesel station - there was a warning sign on the pump - "illegal for use in 2007 or newer vehicles." Mine is a 94 - and I was thinking. If I had been driving a $40,000 2007 diesel truck - and this happened - boy would I be ticked off.

There are 2 different varieties of Power Service. One for winter use and one for summer use. The only difference as far as I know is that the White bottle (winter) has the anti-gel additive in it. That is the one I was running and that alot of people run year round.

Sulfur is being drastically reduced in diesel fuel ( known as ULSD, or "green diesel fuel") in order for the 2007 diesel engines' emissions equipment to operate without damage.

The gov't has a big push on ( called EPA phase III) to reduce PM and NOx emissions from diesels.. the fuel itself doesn't accomplish this, but the PM filters and oxidation catalysts do, and the sulfur will pollute and ruin these devices.

As of June 6th, 2006, refineries can only produce a diesel fuel of 6 - 8 ppm sulfur max, or face shut down by the EPA. Not everyone knows this.

October 15th, 2006, is the date that retail diesel pumps are mandated to have 15ppm diesel available for purchase. ( for on road applications).

Refineries can't afford to make different sulfur levels per application ( on or off road), so everyone will get the same stuff. ULSD will be required for off road, marine, and locomotives soon enough, so that's why the super low limit at the refineries is being enforced now.

What's happening is that sulfur is being picked up as the fuel travels through pipelines, so the exact sulfur content at a given point on the distribution chain is anybody's guess.. the sulfur content is measured, and the fuel is distributed accordingly - high sulfur goes to off road, anything close to 15ppm goes to retail, etc..

So now you know..

Tom

Mostly true....

Actually all the fuels will be ULSD more because of the possibility of cross contamination, rather than a cost factor. They did produce both High and Lower Sulfur diesels.

A lubricity additive is already being injected into the fuel you buy, as the engine manufacturers and the government saw this problem coming. (How effective it is however, is anyones guess....

In most areas you are already buying the ULSD, as everything needs to be flushed through. We have been buying and selling the ULSD for two months now, but cannot call it as such yet because of the contamination issues.

Who knows when some of the less used stations will be properly flushed out to meet the new standards....

Well, definately sounds like I should pick up a 5 gallon gas can or a jerry can or something and fill that as a backup. The UP is pretty remote in places.

I'm hoping to catch it in the "big city" on the WI/MI border and then anywhere I see it. One tank SHOULD get me to the bridge but dunno if I really want to chance it.
