I'm swapping the blown 700r4 in my '85 K20 diesel Suburban next week and I think I have everything lined up but I want to bounce it off of you guys to double check. Here is what I have:
2000 Chevy 4x4 nv4500 with bell housing and shifter
NP208 from a cucv th400
Both the 700r4 and a th400 cross members. The 400 is from a cucv
Hydroboost clutch pedals from an '87 3500
Here is what I plan on ordering this week:
6.2l single mass flywheel and bolts
6.2l clutch, not sure on which one yet
The internal slave cylinder for the 2000 transmission
Hydraulic master cylinder for the '87 pedals
The line and fittings for the cylinders
The GM fluid for the trans
The only thing I'm not 100% confident in is which clutch to use and if the master cylinder and slave will marry up so any advice or better yet, personal experience it greatly appreciated.
The Suburban is going to be used for trips out to the desert and trail riding, it has 4.10s in the 14bolt sf and 10 bolt front. I have a set of cucv axles, dana 60 and 14FF to swap into it at a later time.

I may be wrong but I think your NP208 from a 700R4 will have a 27 spline input, and the NV4500 has a 32 spline output shaft...so you'll need to either swap the input to a 32 spline one or get a transfer case that was behind a Th400 or SM465 (which also had 32 spline outputs)..

I'm no help on the clutch questions..

Im pretty sure its a 32 spline but I'll count it tonight. The transfer case is off of the cucv th400.

Isn't there something "wrong" with the later 4500's/bellhousing that doesn't let them mate up to the earlier engines properly? Something about the length of the input shaft and input bearing?

I know there was the early/late low gear change, but IIRC something else changed with the input. I don't know if this gives some idea of what is going on or not: http://www.advanceadapters.com/part_viewer.php?pn=712576

You need a line like this to use that bell and the 87 cylinder on the firewall.
Doubtful that the starter nose fits in the gas bellhousing.

Thanks, they seller says the trans is from a 2000 chevy 3500 but isn't this shift tower from a 92-95?

This is really close to what I did to my CUCV.

BH will be fine if it matches the tranny. I haven't heard of any other GM input shafts aside from the standard 10 spline.

The 32 spline 208 will work. The crossmember needs to be the shorter W or S style. I think 1985 is the first year for that, but the CUCVs are all old flat style. I built a hokey block to adapt my flat mount.

Here's how I made the factory mount for an NV4500 work with the old flat crossmember. You can see the square tube spacer I made to go between bushing and crossmemeber.

And here's my 1993 NV4500, yours appears to have the to early shift tower as well.

I used an NV4500 to replace the 4L60E in a 93 K1500 I had years ago. Went right in place with no mods other than new frame holes for the crossmember. So you should be fine with your existing driveshafts since the 4L60 and 700R are similar in length.

I didn't even drill new frame holes. NV4500 and TH400 of that later era were a perfect match. My tape measure thinks my '84 700R4 will also be a close match.

The input retaining ring is different between early and late NV4500s, but if you have the correct bell housing you will be fine. The early external slave version matches the SM465 bell housings, the later one is the one shown above with the extra cutouts.

Dodge and GM cases have different input shafts, that might be what you're thinking of.

Here is a bunch of tech info on fitting the NV4500 into non-standard vehicles.

http://high-impact.net/nv4500/

I've gone back and forth on the 4500 for a long time, but eventually kind of pushed it out of my head. Still tempting, but the cutting the tunnel, re-gearing axles, for one gear gain, on a truck that might see 3k miles a year, isn't really worth it. Been long enough since I was looking that I forgot about most of it. :(

I think some of what I was thinking about was the external slave cylinder versions, which interfere with the passenger drop driveshafts.

When I bought the Suburban, or traded a honda generator and $200 for it, I knew the trans was bad and internet searching and all the forums swore that K20's only had TH-400s behind them until 1990. I just happened to have a TH400/np208 in the garage out of an M1009 Cucv with 25K miles on it. Well I dropped the glove box and there she was, 4.10 towing package with a factory 700r4, so that screwed up my plans. The th400 with the 4.10s are going to spin the 6.2l way too fast for me. I looked at a sm465 and going with 35" tires but that is more of a band aid so I decided on the nv4500. I would have went with an nv3500 too but they cost just as much around here. The overdrive should put me at 2000-2100 rpm with the 4.10s and 33" in tires (Cooper discoverer ST 255/85R16s).
My goal is 20mpg out of it so we shall see. If I put the M1008 axles with the 4.56's in them under it 5th gear is going to be really nice.

So both the sellers of the NV4500 and the hydro pedals flaked on me. I am used to people saying they are buying something on Craigslist flaking, but not sellers! We talked multiple times this week but yesterday they went quiet and never gave me an address. Its odd when you want to hand someone money and they won't take it! The hunt is back on.

Craigslist can be scary--several buyers in MA have been lured to a location to buy the item(s) listed, then robbed !---they know your coming with cash, and its an easy way for them to lure unsuspecting buyers to a secluded location to relieve them of their money..maybe more..(a few people have been injured or worse in the scuffle that ensued)..

I haven't bought much off craigslist or internet "yard sales"in the past year or more--the few things I did buy did turn out to be "real" and a bargain, and the sellers seemed OK---but if I do see something I'd like to buy now--if the seller refuses to meet me somewhere "public" like a shopping mall parking lot, police station, etc, then its "no sale"...chances are its a scam!..

It is too easy to put a photo off google in a fake ad and "suck them in",so to say..the exception is if its a complete vehicle that cant be moved--in that case I'd have to take my chances-In that case,I always tell someone where I'm headed and why I'm going there, when it comes to buying off Craigslist..
