Where do I test the vacuum on my 86 6.2l chevy diesel, and what numbers should I find?

Your vac pump should be on the back of the motor where a distributor would go on a chevy gasser....is there a particular problem you are havinf because of lack of vac?

I know about the pump driving off the oil pump on the rear of the manifold.. What I wonder is what number, ie. how many inches, it should be drawing. I also wonder where the reading is taken, as it fluctuates when taken at the pump, but is steady past the valve in front of the air cleaner.

Take your measurement right where it goes into the HVAC controls using a T fitting. The pump should pulsate for the first bit, but if you don't have any leaks in the system it should settle at about 20 in hg
