Looking at picking up a 1993 6.5 Non-turbo diesel mated to a 4L80E all complete with controllers. Mostly interested in the TCM but I was pondering swapping a 5.7TBI out for the 6.5. Anyone have any info on the 6.5 non-turbo's? Could I put a Turbo on it? I'm guessing they are dog's like the 6.2 without a turbo. Also, what would be needed in the way of motor mounts, manifold, etc to go into a c/k? I'm pretty sure it is mechanical injection which makes it appealing. I am smog exempt so that's not an issue. The thing kinda looks like a 6.2 with a serpentine setup.

Any particular reason? I know the 6.2 and 6.5TD are both good engines. What would be so bad about a 6.5 Non-Turbo? Seems to me that it is nothing more than a 6.2 with different heads, intake, and perhaps a few other small differences. I thought the 6.2 and 6.5 were nearly identical blocks? Should be a good runner unless I'm missing something?

check and make sure it is a 6.5 diesel - i can't remember if it was in 93 or 94 that they started making the 6.5's - not sure they ever made a non-turbo 6.5, but i could be quite wrong. however, it'll all swap over to a square body pretty easy.

i love my 6.2 - wouldn't run anything else in my wheelin rig. gets great mileage, has kick ass low end grunt for crawling, and is naturally fuel injected so i don't stall out like most others on the trail with me.... they're super easy engines to maintain and keep running. just keep the glow plugs happy and you're good to go. ;)

Your questions would be better answered in the diesel forum. Yes, you can put a turbo set-up on it.

The first 6.5s were non turbo but GM quickly added a turbo.

I have been a mechanic for ten years and i am a chevy guy all the way.I have never heard anything good about chevy diesels, most people change out there 6.2 asap and put something else in .why do u think isuzu makes there new diesel motors.

Must just be who you have talked to, I guess. I'd say that for every guy that doesn't like the 6.2, there's two more that love them.

i have driven both the 6.5l hmmv's, and my current m1009 with a 6.2l the 6.5 without a turbo has a slight bit more grunt then the 6.2 but the difference is hardly noticable to anyone. both the 6.2 and 6.5 are reliable engines, in fact if i ever blow the 6.2 i currently run it would get another 6.2 put in its place

the 6.2 is a killer wheeling engine. it's extremely light weight, gets great fuel economy and has killer low end grunt for the trails.pair all that with a proper gear ratio for the tire size, and you'd be more than happy with it. problem with these engines is that since they were intended for fuel economy, the came with terrible gears and so got a bad name. compared to the stock 350's i've driven, it's pretty much the same. the only advantage the 350 has on it is its RPM range.

for a mud truck, it would suck big time. for a tow rig, it would suck big time. for a daily driver and or wheeler, it's great. it just has it's very specific purposes - just like the general intended. i've got 38" tires on my 6.2 powered rig and i get over 20mpg w/ a manual trans (no overdrive).

stick around long enough and you'll see tons of people interested in swapping in a 6.2 into their rigs. like i said, for a wheelin rig - it's a killer engine.

My 84 blazer has a 6.2 with a turbo 400 I really like my my 6.2, I would love it more with a NV4500 behind it though.:D My 89CC Has 6.5td in place of 6.2 and also has a turbo 400. The 6.5 is underpowered for what I have on the truck but Has never given me any problems.

I did start a post over in the diesel section but this is what I was looking for guys. I am going to see if I can go ahead and pick it up. I'm sure that Isuzu Duramax would be fun but it's an $8k package from the factory so I'm sure it's not cheap for a swap. Aside from that, I know you can put a turbo on these things, so is it just as simple as scavenging the turbo off a 6.5TD or do I have to go the gale banks route or something. There is no PCM on this one, old mechanical FI.

There's a whole variety of routes to go to make more power. Just read some of the threads on here. Guys have built up (very expensively too, but it is possible) NA 6.2's that make as much power as most turbo'd 6.2's. The easiest and probably cheapest route would likely be to just make sure the engine is sound and put a turbo on it. Junkyard 6.5L stuff or a used Banks kit are the most popular methods.

Frankly, with my low geared truck the J-code 6.2L isn't slow at all. Is it a big block? No. Is it at least the same as a similar vintage 350? Yep. These were made to be high mpg alternatives to the most popular GM truck engine of the time...the small block. Dodge and Ford started their truck diesels by just dropping in their small dump truck and bus diesels while GM actually was working along a different thought process. It can be argued either way that one or the other was wrong but hey, don't compare the 6.2/6.5L family to a Cummins, Isuzu, or Powerstroke big truck engine in a light truck and you won't be disappointed.

My truck's gotta be around 7k on the hoof. 4.56 gears, heavy 38" Michelin tires, aerodynamic as a mailbox and the good old non-OD, power sucking TH400...and I still manage 13mpg or so. Look at what Colby and others have done and you can see there's more room for power and mpg with these engines.

can you do anything for more power on the 6.2'S OR 6.5'S
the progression of power mods is this:

1. get decent gearing first. you'll be amazed at the difference. although, i'm running 4.10's w/ 38's and don't really need anything lower (except crawling around on the trail). the low end torque on this engine, matched to a manual transmission will make it jump across town if you don't let the clutch out nice - as compared to the jump across the street w/ the 350's i've driven...

2. turn up the fuel pump, making sure you have an EGT guage. this is a great free power mod that i have yet to do, simply because i don't have an EGT guage and i'm kinda paranoid about guages.

3. gear driving timing set up, lower compression pistons, and then a turbo.

that's about it, until you get into the super crazy stuff - like maxpf's build will probably gain him quite a bit of power over stock. or like the dude who did double fuel pumps, no governor and could run his up to 8000 rpm... insane stuff.

Peterson's did a Banks kit on a 6.2 with several chassis dyno pulls along the way. After having the injectors rebuilt as well as the injector pump, adding a 'J' code intake and decent exhaust it put down 135 hp and 340 lbs of torque to the rear wheels. With the turbo it put down 172 hp and 451 lbs of torque at the rear wheels.

i have lost the dyno sheet that he posted up regarding this some time back. wish i could find it. i guess that adds to my mods list a bit too.

why are you paraniod of guages. seems like an odd thing to say. guages tell you whats going on with your engine. why would you NOT want them.

sorry, what i meant was I'm paranoid, so i won't turn up my pump till i have a gauge. :)

Colby, that dyno sheet was from peterson's 4Wheeler mag. I'm almost sure that site is still up somewhere, but haven't searched for it in a while.

6.2 and mech 6.5 bring the goodness. :D I can pull down 23-25 mpg out of my pick-up every day, which is why i use it as a commuter vehicle (300+ miles per week)
