Go to Post 7 for the latest. It wasn't the turbo.

I would first remove the system and inspect it. Could just be a bad gasket or hose leaking oil and or vacuum. I've rebuilt my Toyota Mr2 turbo system 6 freaking times and never had to replace parts. Just hoses and gaskets.

Time consuming, yes!

dont know if this has been handled yet or not,
tell him for the money, get an A Team Turbo from Walking J Designs

Since I posted the truck has continued to give trouble. Think he's getting rid of it.

Long story.

Short:
A-Turbo turned out to be a rat nest in his air filter box. Literally. Took that out and all his boost and performance came back.
I didn't comment on regular maintenance...:doah:

B-After that it would run fine for a while and then start giving him trouble repeatedly for a while, then go back to running fine. Would cut out on him, stutter, die, etc. Might fire right up, might not. Would usually run fine at low speeds if he was bumping around his farm but give him trouble when running at speed. His descriptions started to sound like the IP to most of us at work. He took it to a mechanic who replaced his throttle pedal assembly.:dunno:
Drove it home and a mile from home it died on him and started up the issues again.
He's pissed as **** at it now but again...everyone keeps saying IP to him about it. I think right now it's either going to get replaced or fixed. Probably fixed when he cools down enough over it.

One of those, "we've been telling you that for a month..." situations.

Has he checked the pmd. Or pulled codes. If his pmd hasn't been relocated out of the engine bay I'd be leaning that way

I know he's got a heat sink on it. Keeps getting told that's good enough but I'm wondering since I've heard a lot of folks mention moving it far away from the stock location.

Anybody sell a relocation kit with wiring harness?

Errr more specific.... Get a new PMD right now. And relocate it with a heatsink. There's kits you can get .with the extention harness, a new driver, and nice deep finned heatsink. Not too much money IIRC. Easy install, and good to go in the future.

What are the chances it's the IP and not or as well as the PMD?

I only ask since I know very little about the PMD and all that. Only had NA 6.2L's.

Tell him toget a obd2 scanner from autozone. There are codes that will narrow it down to ip. No codes usually points to pmd. Check out Heath diesel or SS diesel supply or any other number of shops.
Isually you can get a new pmd, resistor, harness and heat sink for under $400

Whether he pulls codes or not. If the pmd isn't already relocated, history would dictate that theres a 90% chance the pmd is cooked. Due to those very exact symptoms.

There's 2 big transistors in there just pumping out heat. They cook themselves because of insufficient OEM cooling due to mounting location.

It's not usually the mechanical portion components.

Gotcha.

Where's the best place to relocate it to?

there are some kits sold that relocate to the firewall or to the top of the intake manifold... but those are just touted as the best by those that sell them. the generally excepted place to put it is out of the engine bay. most guys go either in front of the radiator stack (some try to avoid that bcuz of the 6.5 overheating problems) other most common place is on the front bumper somewhere. its all sealed so you dont have to worry about moisture. make sure he gets a cable that is the 6' version not the 8" version.

Okay. Any issue with water? I joked about him not taking it water crossing and he said he has driven through a creek on his property before.
