I wonder what the production figures are on the 6cyl K5 Blazers. I came across one recently for the first time. I've always just seen V8 350 or 400. The 6yl has got be be rather rare.

I'm sure they're rare. I've not seen one in person myself.

They were not available after '84 I believe. Might have been earlier, I would have to check. They were never available with a V6, only the straight six.

Yep, I double checked, the last year for the six cylinder is '82. Same as the C10 Blazer.

I found a '78 K5 with a 6 cylinder in a junkyard outside of Greeley Colorado years ago. Loaded truck. All the way down to a factory tach in the dash.

That's cool. Could you imagine checking all the option boxes but not the 350 or 400? Definitely someone's special order.

I don’t know how anybody would do it but some of the old timers swore by that 250 six and shunned the small blocks.

I’m struggling to remember what trans it had. I’m pretty sure it was a manual but don’t remember it having but one shifter for the t-case poking up from the floor.

My dad has worked at the same Chevy dealership since the early 70s. He has mentioned the straight six was a fairly popular engine in the base model c/k 10 and k5 in the early 70s. People loved them for work trucks.

I never driven one, but he had multiple straight six trucks and one blazer. He said at the time the low rpm torque couldn't be beat. Especially with the Manual.

The only straight 6 I've ever been around is the Ford version and they were great engines with lots of torque. I'd definitely take a Chevy with a straight 6.

I will say my buddy Larry had a cool plan for his up coming blazer project. He had found a 292 straight six and put it in with a nv4500 and a 205. Only flaw in the plan was the supposed “runner” 292 was garbage. Would have cost 2-3 times more to rebuild than any small block.

He was even going to put a stand-alone fuel injection on it. It would have been wild.

Column shifted three speed most likely.

Of the old squares on the road today, I wonder how many started life with a 6cyl that has since been replaced with a V8. Might explain why they were popular but don't seem common now.

I had to go and double check, because I thought the tachometer was not available with the six cylinder. I doubt you grabbed a picture of the SPID, and saved it for some dork on the internet……

Wonder if it was swapped in?

I have bought a few parts rigs with small blocks and six cylinder emission stickers on the radiator support.

I also think they were less desirable, so they got crushed more often.

Take your son’s Buick for example. They probably sold more four doors back in the day, but I imagine a lot more two doors exist today than four doors.

3 on the tree who used to post here had a first gen, was straight 6, 3 on the tree, total stock.
I was thinking that was the case. I just about added to my previous post that if I had seen a 6cyl Blazer it was his first gen.

I still think about how he lost all of the plastic on his steering wheel doing Chinaman's Gulch and he was trying to steer a non-power steering truck with the thin little wire core.
