So last weekend I bought a 86 k10 silverado 305 700r4 . The "kid" I got it from never had a carbed motor. He wanted a truck that he could jump in start and drive he couldn't figure out why it died right after start up when he put it in gear. I've been driving it for a week now runs great, but friday morning it started to have a issue with the choke. After warm up the choke will not close causing high idle. Yes the truck still has the stock quadrajet. Any cheap easy fixes I could do to get to work again I need to drive the truck to work sunday which is 15 miles away.

the choke should be opening as it warms up, electric choke

check to make sure you are getting 12v to the choke with the key on, if you are, yo might have a bad choke spring:dunno:

I meant open as you said I did lose the power to the choke, as I was looking over the carb the other day, I noticed that the carb still has the block offs over the needle adjusters. I also got a hold of the owner who had the truck before the "kid" I got it from. He had owned the truck since 1987, it was a texas truck up until late 2009, when he moved up here to wisconsin and since has rotted out pretty bad in 4 years or so. It was only drive for one year and has sat since nov of 2010 in a field when he got a new truck, Also he said the 68xxx miles is true has never rolled over.

High idle should be the step cam thing. Stays there till you blip the throttle. Make the checks 85 octane said. If it is elec, should be able to adjust the plastic plate on the choke cover.

After its fully warm, electric working or not, the bi metallic spring should have the choke plate fully open just from the engine heat. Three screws to remove the cover, if its never been replaced it could still have the little rivets.

Its working now I was not get power to it, the truck has nver been touched expect for maintenance stuff no kind of after market stuff on it the old men that owned it went to gm for anything that was done to the truck, I mean everything down to oil changes. I got paper work from him on Saturday dating back to 87 for oil changes and the sale papers for the truck he bought off the dealership lot with 102 miles in jan of 87

So the other night I had a new noise start it sounds like its coming from the speedo, it only does it when its under 30 or so degrees out. Has anyone ever had this happen? Also when its making the noise the speedo is off by 10 to 15 mph colder it is more off it is. The truck as it is has the 3.08 gears on 31s. Could I have ice in the speed cable?

I would do the easiest thing first lol. Take the cable off at the transfercase and turn it with your fingers. Make sure it turns smooth. If you have some help, you can put the cable in an electric drill SET ON SPEED 1, SLOW. You don't need to spin it all that fast. Have the other person listen around for the noise, check the speedo in the dash, might be the gauge itself.

Something along those lines might help find the problem. Check to make sure the exhaust hasn't melted the line also. When I bought mine, that was the problem.

I already checked to see if it was melted its not the cable looks fairly new. It is only happening when its below freezing, when its above freezing no noise and the speedo reads only a few mph off. Colder it gets more off the speedo gets like this morning it was 17deg out doing about 35 mph the speedo was reading about 50 mph.

Disconnect the speedo cable at the transfer case, go for a drive when its cold. If the noise is gone, its the speedo or cable. Reconnect the cable to transfer case, disconnect it at the speedo, if you hear it, its the cable, if you don't, its the speedo. Never heard of a speedo making funky noises. I can just assume if it is the cable, the super cold making the cable/housing stiff. You check the cable to see if it's routed funky, sharp turns/bends?

Sometimes its hard to pin point a noise, if you disconnect the cable at the transfer case, and there's still a noise, time to figure out something else.

Interested to see what u find. Mine made this noise a few years back. The speedometer would oscillate and be noticably off-target while the noise was there. Then it just stopped, but I'm sure it will resurface one day.

It also only did it when it was cold outside.

.

I did both after I let the truck sit in the garage yesterday. My garage is about 55 deg, it made no noise. This morning I tried it again after it sat outside last night it was about -2 without the windchill, this morning it was about 6 above zero. It didn't make the noise but the speedo was way off was doing about 35mph down the side street the speedo was pegged at 85.
