Yeah, maybe I should have picked a different car to play with in this regard, but its what I got, and I still think its the coolest body ever made by GM, so I’ll keep feeding the beast as $$$$ allows.
The rear end from the differential to the outer axles, including suspension is costing me as much as the engine in the Maiden.
How much does a 4 link 9” setup cost?
Toms differentials just got a long awaited backorder of the 31 spline 1350 joint outer axles in today, talk about luck, they’ve been on order for months.
A little back history, Tom the owner died a couple years ago, and its been a bit of a struggle to keep the business running, but Desiree is taking orders and keeping the business alive.
So I got the axle kits and double offset trailing arms ordered and sending them to the guy (Gary) that built my diff. During our conversation today he got into the details of blueprinting the bearing assemblies. These new 31 spline axles (OEM was 17) have a larger bearing surface and the 79 trailing arms have a bigger radius on the legs for attaching the bearing housings. More stronger to rotational forces. They also have 1/2” ARP studs instead of the oem 7/16”. This setup will be much stronger overall than whats under the car now...all rebuilt 1964 trailing arms and bearing support parts.
The double offset trailing arms will allow a wider rim/tire...only to the limits of the frame and rear spring. These arms will move the rear spring inboard a little over an inch on each side. Far enough that the frame itself becomes the interfering factor. I have to get a 2-1/2 inch narrower main leaf to use these trailing arms. A lot of expense for another 2 inches of tire.
I gotta get in line for Gary’s expertise, he’s in high demand.
