64 Vette….Rebuild 2.0

Hernia surgery recovery fuggin SUCKS.
Feel for ya man. Get well soon.
I got a week off from the dealership and parked my ass in my recliner and played video games or surfed the web. As painful as it was it was a pretty nice break from the dealer as sad as that is to say.

My perspective may be skewed slightly since my hernia surgery was done on an emergency basis and the pain I had after surgery didn’t come close to the pain I had 12 or so hours that led up to it. Thank goodness I was out cold when they put the catheter in and when they took it out too.

Follow the lifting restrictions and realizing I had no core strength to sit up from a laying position in bed was an adjustment for sure.

Mine were both 6 weeks off and WAY more painful than the hernia its self had been lol.
The hernias were bad.
I'd be in tears trying to walk to the back of Walmart and back to my truck.
But recovery was brutal. Both times.
5 weeks in, I thought there was no way I'd be working in a week.
Had pretty bad tears from a bad incident though.

I some how caught a 240# dude that fell off a ladder above my head.
Caught him, and held him up. Without him hitting the floor.
First one was fixed then, and the second popped a couple years later. But they said it looked like it'd been damage from the first incident.

No friggin idea how :dunno:
But he'd have landed on the back of his neck if I hadn't.

Totally worth all the pain I went through.

Wow, seems this hernia thing is more common than I realized. Mine is right at my navel area, a ventral hernia.
I’m thankful mine didn’t pop. I caught it early I guess, and tried to minimize chances of pushing it out. Doc said it looked like the wall was weakened from my prostate removal cancer surgery on 9/24. I have 6 incision spots from that deal. Still testing with hardly traceable PSA numbers 19 months later too, so worth it! I was thinking it was just scar tissue building up from those incisions.
Doc said no more than 10-15# lifting, and minimize stairs. I’m getting a couple hundred steps in 3-4 times a day walking the driveway. Its getting easier. Obviously getting up and down is the painful part. My granddaughter has made a bunch of food for me and stayed the last two days w me. I’m getting along good today, so she’ll just be stopping by after work this afternoon. I’m weaning myself off the Oxycodone today, relying on Motrin and Acetaminophen. I’ll be stopping the Motrin tomorrow as I start my blood thinner med again. Ive been using a cold pack a few times a day to help w swelling as well.
Thanks for the support brothers!

PS sneezing sucks!

I had hernia surgery in 2020, surgery date delayed 3 months due to covid.
Yes, sneezing sucks.
I walked around the neighborhood once or two a day during recovery.

Uh, just a week or so ago, you were helping me shove that heavy axle around. I feel terrible now. I sure hope the recovery goes quickly.

Yeah, I was hoping it wasn’t going to blow through….it didn’t!
Recovery is going well, I’m off pain meds now, and although its uncomfortable at times (just when I need to use my abs…lol), not enough to keep taking the pain meds. Got a big ugly bruise though…good thing I can’t see it on the bottom side of my belly!
Mostly just doing a 1/2 mi walk a few times a day…its a really nice weekend here in lower Mi. and tinkering with a few unphysically demanding things around the house.

Took a trip to Detroit/Pontiac today. Ran across Corvette #36. Perhaps one of the earliest of 225 still existing today. This car sold for $660,000 at Barrett Jackson several years ago. Not sure why its taken apart, including the interior. and fun fact….no exterior door handles, had to reach inside to open the door. Also these came with simple plastic side windows that you snapped into place, not exactly a questionable weather car.
The owner makes and sells Corvette parts.

I'm going to guess he didn't let you do donuts in the white Vette.

I think hes been in business a long time. He’s probably 75-80 yrs old. The building is pretty old in a cool way though, like walking into a 1940’s-50’s parts showroom.
For that kind of money invested, I dont think its a driver….lol

After evaluating the bottom side of the frame, I decided to replace the side sections due to being mangled and pitted.
The side rail kits come with inner and outer halves (like the factory) and come with an inner junction sleeve to join it at the front of the 48” section, and also an inner bulkhead piece that goes in where the main rear crossmember joins, as well as endcaps to finish it off. I also ordered a couple new body mounts for those sections.

All the new pieces cost $890

I also got a replacement front crossmember bottom piece as these are usually used as a jack point and people don’t distribute the weight and it caves them in. My existing pieces has many dents, a couple holes/tears, and some pitting. I will reinforce the inside of this piece to withstand some jacking, and make a pad for the floorjack if I ever need to lift it that way.
The two lower A arm braces are mangled too, so those will be replaced as well. The replacements don't have the holes for the A arm bolts though….easy enough to do, as I can use the upper brace as a template for drilling the holes in the lower braces.

All of these replacements are 12 ga, same as factory metal.
I need to build a framework to keep the frame plumb and square while cutting out the siderails.
Going to try my best not to screw this up, as there will be lots of cutting and welding the new pieces in.

I cut one corner open to check out factory assembly placement of the bulkhead piece and overlap of the section halves.
Also torched a couple broken bolts and welded a nut to them, soaked them in penetrating oil, and rhem came right out. Happy day!
Bought a pair of halfshaft hoops from another vette guy in Detroit.
