the brass bushing should be 1/4 pipe. If you remove the bushing, then the late model heads( small spark plugs) will be 3/8" pipe. early heads are 1/2" pipe (big spark plugs).
I have had several engines with 1/2" pipe thread ports and small , 5/8" hex spark plugs. Check yours to confirm.
Unfortunately no absolutes in car repair. I know many people will drill out the 3/8" and tap them to 1/2" so the correct sender can be used. I contemplated that solution for a minute, then I turned down the correct sensor and threaded it in 3/8 pipe. Gm probably did make small plug 1/2 sensor heads during transition period. I couldn't tell you what years.
