69 Rear main seal

Easiest way is to pull the engine...

I would try to figure out if it is a 1 piece or 2 piece rear main seal... run the numbers on the block through one of the websites floating around that has all of that information.

If it's a 2 piece rear main seal you might be able to get away with just seperating the trans from the back of the block dropping the oil pan, removing the oil pump and that main bearing cap, it's gonna be a messy job though.

1 piece rear main seal I would say the engine would have to come out to change.

Nothing wrong with pulling the engine out and throw it on a stand and do a full gasket, seal and freeze plug job on it. Who knows, you might find some other stuff that needs servicing or that you want to replace or freshen up.

I think it would be easiest to pull the engine though.

2 piece rear main seals are easy, you just have to be careful and make sure you use the little plastic tab that comes with the seal. I've always used Felpro 2 piece rear main seals and they've worked well.

Never had to change a 1 piece seal... had a 1 piece rear main seal engine but never had problems with the seal that was in there when I got it.

Good luck!

Should be 2 piece unless the engine is newer

I've done one in frame before. Seem to remember taking the cross member out

It sucks

I changed 2 piece rear main seals a few times without doing anything more than pulling the oil pan off,I did have to remove the tranny dust cover around the torque converter to get the pan off--both halves of the seal are in the rear main bearing cap..

One piece rear mains can be done by pulling the transmission back far enough to get your hands and wrenches in there..

Its a job best done on a lift though, especially if your over 40!..

Same here, 2 piece are really easy. I loosened all the caps to make some wiggle room but I probably didn't need to. I took them off one at a time and inspected the bearings while I was in there because I tend do stuff like that.
