Could someone please help me I have purchased a 70 gmc jimmy 4x4 for my son. I need to replace the rear end "someone has put a 5 hole rear end on it". Since I need to do this, I thought I would swap out the front so I could put a later model with disk brakes. Could you tell me what years would be a direct bolt on.

All GM fronts are a direct swap as far as spring perch width. Brake lines may vary between a 10 bolt and a Dana 44 (what it has now). The rear was originally a 12 bolt, but a 10 12 or 14 bolt will all fit with adjustment of the spring perches. I believe 69-72 perches are narrower by a couple inches. Hope this helps.

Just swap the axle shafts??

If the rear end is the correct ratio to match the front, and the only problem is you have a 5 lug rear, and a 6 lug front, you can swap 6 lug axles into a 5 lug 2wd axle ,they interchange, just find some 6 lug axle shafts at the junkyard....

unless you are doing a total 100% resto, ditch the front axle. '70 was the only year GM used open knuckled front d44's with drum brakes, and the drums are specific to this year, and are hard to find. it would be less of a headache to just convert to discs, but that is my opinion.
