70 Jimmy--Rusty Rebuild

Love the wheels and paddles. I've also heard dry ice will freeze that rubber undercoating crap and make it come off in chunks but I have only seen videos of it.

I really wanted a Bronze wheel but could only find places that had 1 or two in stock.

I could get the undercoating off, but the metal underneath isn't in the best shape either. Even though it's getting coated and probably carpet over top I'd rather not have a patchwork quilt going on.

We made it out, waiting for the park to open.

Installed the pre-filter. Didn't have time to make a shield for it, should be ok.

I expected to have some problems today and I wasn't disappointed. Truck would run great then run like total garbage. Fuel filter kept plugging up again. Towards the end of the day each time I would get less and less out of it.

Pushed out a valve cover gasket and couldn't get it back in. Had to run to the parts store for a new set. Went back out and it was running a little rough again. I pulled the filter again and it wasn't as plugged as I'd hoped for as poorly as it was running. Was super lean and I noticed that the fuel pressure was higher than normal. Took a chance and pulled the fuel rail and injectors out. Cleaned with brake clean and put it back together. Ran much better, best it had ran in a long time. Even though the screen in there is real fine some of the trash was making its way to the rail.

Last time I pulled the filter (I think I did it 5 times) it had a bunch of sand in it. I don't know where it would be getting in. Tank was filled right to the top when we started the day. Anyplace sand would get in I'd assume would be wet from fuel coming out. The vent line is my primary suspect, it's only about 2' long and tucked up into the frame. Grabbed a small fuel filter and more brake clean on the way out of town.

Was super windy pretty much all day. Sand was blowing everywhere. All the big hills had steep drop offs after the tops.

To recap the weekend and some thoughts on what needs to be addressed.

I left the filter off yesterday before we left so I had to toss that back in. Fired it up and it was running rough. Fuel pressure was low (35psi) again. Feeling the header tubes, only 5 were getting warm. I had a feeling of what was going on but didn't want to admit it to myself just yet. Pulled the injectors out again and got some more junk out of the rail. Reinstalled and it was running better but still had low pressure. I'm thinking the pump is on its way out. Having had so much stuff go through it. Hoping the sock on it is plugged up but I'm not betting on that.

Other than the fuel issues we really didn't have any problems. The Terminator harness must have a bad connection somewhere in it. There were times where the screen would shut off. Have it narrowed down to one of the branches. A zip tie to keep pressure on it fixed that for now. This is somewhat of a know issue with the harnesses so I'm not too surprised.

Truck handled great, rides way better than my 86. Have to slow down for the really whooped out sections. The chatter bumps and other rough stuff it just cruises through. Gets on top and the shocks work better that faster you go. Bump stop placement in front seems about right. The rears could be a little shorter, still a decent amount of travel left in the shocks. Where they are now, the paddles just barely touch the quarters so I'll probably leave them. Couldn't really feel when you'd hit the stops. I know they were getting used though because the shocks have little bumpers on the shafts, I moved those up to the body's to see how much travel I was getting.

I've got a 31 gallon tank in it currently. Will probably replace that with a 25. The axle never hit it that I could tell (my strategic dents worked) but the brake line on top of the diff jammed into it and dented it. Line isn't leaking but it's bent over at a weird angle now.

The couple times it would get warm, slowing down to let the fans catch up was all that was needed. Spent most of the time in 2wd with the rpms fairly high. The paddles dig until you get some ground speed up and get on top, can definitely tell when they stop spinning so much and start hooking up.

Even driving it around town I thought that I may want to do a gear swap. On the road the motor is happier with the rpm's up a little bit (2200/2300 or so). You're either lugging it in one gear or spinning it high in the other. In the sand, 2wd/4hi was either 2nd or 3rd. 4lo was 3rd, 4th and 5th. Going to a 4.56 or 4.88 might be the answer. Will plug some numbers into the calculator later.

Found the source of the low fuel pressure.

Not sure if it split from excess pressure when everything was plugged up or just the garbage parts store hose.

Note the amount of sand on top of the tank. Inside the frame rails was the same. This was after I power washed it before unloading off the trailer. The paddles kick up so much sand (compared to the street tires) and with the speeds we were running, I'm thinking that a lot of it got sucked back in behind the truck.

Is that hose labeled as fuel injection rated? Weird.

Yeah it's fuel injection, submersible rated hose. It was still pumping but bleeding through the inner once the pressure got about 30ish. That one came from AutoZone. Don't know what brand they use.

I ordered some Gates stuff from Napa that's good till 100psi and rated for ethanol use. Half tempted to just go right to a braided stainless line.

I used a stainless hardline on mine, but the pump is external so maybe different issues.

For having had the 31gal tank in/out so many times, I struggled with the smaller 25 way more than I should have.

Had to modify the sending unit for the wiring bulkhead, in doing so I knicked the tube for the feed line. I didn't know that until I had the tank in and hit the key to check for leaks. After spraying gas everywhere a few times I figured out where it was coming from and had to drop the tank again.

The gas leaking all over the fresh paint took most of it off the tank and straps.

Modified the sending unit from the larger tank to work with the smaller one. Used some compression fittings to shorten the tubes and get the float where it needs to be.

Gauge reads lower than what is actually in the tank. Had about 4 gallons in and it was still on E, putting another 6 in it brought it up over 1/4. If I have the tank out again I'll try bending the float arm a little. For now it's fine and I'd rather have it read lower than what is actually in there rather than higher.

I'm not quite real to go external pump yet. Anymore problems with splitting hoses and I'll try AN fittings and braided lines inside the tank.

The Gates stuff I used this time seems better quality than the last piece I got.

The ironic thing is I want to keep the internal pump because I've found they are more reliable and I've had nothing but problems so far with mine.

Sort of a crappy update.

Haven't done much on this since taking it out to Silver Lake. Been busy with work and other things. Plus I needed a break from it after working on it almost every chance I got to get it ready for that trip.

I have driven it a few times when I've had the chance. Started it up last week and it had a squeal to it. Shut it off and took the other truck as I didn't have time to deal with it.

Today I pulled the belt off to rule out any of the accessories, when I started it the noise was gone....only for about a minute and then it came back. I sounds like a lifter wheel that may be stuck or spun in the tray. Pulled the passenger valve cover (that's the side it's most noticeable on} and everything looked alright. A couple of the rockers I could move on the shaft but nothing out of the ordinary. Took the oil filter off and cut it open and there is definitely some metal in there. That's as far as I got. Going to call BluePrint tomorrow and see how they want to handle this. Purchased In April of 2022 and have just under 500 miles on it, so I'm well within the warranty period.

Yeah it does. Not really too shocked by it, failed lifters aren't that uncommon.

Called them today and started the warranty process. Supposed to get a call back in the next day or so from their "warranty tech". Sounded like they were going to take care of things. If they will cover lifters, trays and gaskets I'll be happy. I'd spring for a different cam if they'll let me and still keep the warranty...if not then I'd expect that from them too.

Christmas update.

Spoke with Blueprint a few days ago, they wanted some pictures of the oil filter element then they were going to call me back. Sent those out Saturday when I got back into town.

Little slivers and shards between all of the pleats. All of those specs are pieces of metal. Even if it's not a lifter, that's a lot of metal for having less than 500 miles and a few hours on it.

Pulled the hood and fenders off. Odds are I'm going to be taking the heads off and this will make it easier. Plus having them off will make paint and body work easier.

Motor is coming out and going back to Blueprint. They are going to tear it down and replace anything bad or questionable.

Wasn't really wanting to pull it out, but sort of knew it was going to happen. Also wasn't looking forward to me possibly having to pull the heads and cam with it still in there either.

Motor is out. Have to pull off a few things before I can strap it to a pallet and get it ready to ship.

Was able to leave the AC and power steering systems intact and the headers in. There is still a lot of sand everywhere even after hitting it with the power washer.

Transmission and transfer case will come out. Trans leaks at the t-case and 3rd gear needs synchros.

You have a lot of faith in FedEx. I once received a reman 7.3L powerstroke upside down in its shipping container. It had clearly been dropped then just put in the container and sent on its way.

That's only slightly less crating than how I got it originally. The 1/2"x4" "boards" they had stapled to the sides wouldn't have stopped much. It's insured so I'm not terribly concerned about it.

Motor made it there Thursday. Guessing unharmed as I didn't hear anything bad from Blueprint. They said 7-8 weeks before I can expect it back.

Holley was having a 20% off sale over the holiday and I splurged on some lights. I would have had more miles on the truck (probably) if the stock headlights weren't so bad. I don't know if they are the OE ones or not, but they aren't very bright.

Options for 5.75" lights are slim. There are a few companies out there making quality drop in replacements. Some of them look like total garbage, others look just like factory with OE style glass lenses. Either way for what they are they cost a lot of money.

Not too thrilled that these say "Holley" on them. Other than that they look fairly stock.

Hard to get an accurate representation on the output. This is a single low beam. They seem to have a nice cutoff in the pattern. Went with the more modern 5700k color. They do offer a more original 3000k color as well.

For now these will go back in the box until I get the front sheet metal painted and reinstalled.
