I have decided to do this swap into my 72 k5, and I'm hoping some people here who have done this can give me some specifics/tips on how to go about it . I'll probably try to get the trans/transfer case combo from a 87?-91 blazer or sub or separately if need be or if that would be a better way to go because the 700 might just be a core anyway. What I was wondering is what should I be looking for specifically ie: elec/manual speedo, "K" case trans. Also should I get the cross member or use mine? I would like to leave the engine in the factory position so....if I did will I be looking at driveline mods with the sye kit? Is this combo shorter/longer than the 350/205 I now have? Should I use the factory tansfercase shifter? Future plans include the install of TPI as well as cc. Would the elec speedo be better for aftermarket cc? The reason for doing this is this K5 is my dd and from what I've read here this would make it nicer on and off road with the addition of od and the lower tc gearing. Thanks for any info.

Why not just use the 205 instead of switching to a 208? Most around here seem to think the 205 is the best TC all around.

I don't have a 208 to check, but I'm guessing it's a similar length to a 203 which is longer than a 205. So you'd need new driveshafts.

No answers for ya right now but I'm doing this exact same swap this summer to mine.

Have a 700r/241 from a 90 blazer I'm going to use, along with the TBI and serp set up.
Kept the cross member on the tranny when I pulled it, had planned on using it.

What gear ratio are you planning on running? Tire size?
I'm doing 4:56's with 36" rubber, should turn about 1936rpm @ 65mph with that combo.
Great first gear crawl ratio @ 75.9 too.

I have a 700r4/241 with SYE and have been very happy with it, good gearing etc. Look for one with a mechanical speedo if you plan on keeping your original speedo, if not then it doesn't matter. This setup is longer so you will have to redo your drivelines, you'll probably want to change to CVs on both shafts to keep vibrations down, especially if it's lifted more than 2 inches.

Speed sensors are another story entirely if you plan on going to fuel injection. There are a lot of variables so figure out specificly what injection system and computer you plan on using. Once you decide on that then I can tell you exactly what kind of signal it will need to work properly.

Yeah I could use the 205 but I was thinking I might use it in another project.

Right now I'm running 35's with 3.73's and on the road 65 seems ok, but running at that speed for any length of time or any faster and it really feels like it could use od. I realize it is already fairly high geared, but for the way I use it daily on and off road I thought the od would be better on road and the lower 1st gear of the 700 combined with the lower low range gear of the 241 would be nice for off road. One example of how I use this k5 is in the summer time I like to go to praire dog hunting in Wyoming. Once I get there it is off road, but 1.5 hours of on road driving to get there.

It is lifted 4" now bb72 so...I guess that means driveline mods. That's ok I pretty much thought so, and I'm getting some mild vibs from the rear now so maybe the cv will fix it.

What about the cross member? Did you use the 205 cm or the 241 cm?

As far as the fuel injection, more than likely it will be TPI. I already have most of what I need to do it. The unit I have is a MAF, but I was thinking convert to MAP and use the 7730 computer. :dunno: From the info I've read so far that seems like a reasonable way to go. The fI will be a first for me so I've got a bunch to learn, but I'm wanting to do it to make the k5 a nicer dd and I think the FI would be a cool project for me to learn about.
